User Reviews for Alameda Athletic Club

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I've been a member of the Alameda Athletic Club for fifteen years and have no complaints. I'm self employed so I go all different hours of the day, sometimes really early in the morning. They are always open on time. I don't know what 'disappointed1' is talking about, but with a screen name like that it sounds like someone might be a little bit of a Negative Nellie. New owners bought the place about three years ago and the place just seems to be getting better and better. It has all new cardio equipment, and plenty of it, I never wait for a machine no matter what time it is. They have lots of free weights, and every strength training machine you can think of. The staff is really helpful and friendly, and so is everyone who works out there. And they have the best rates in town, what's not to like?

If you expect a gym to be open on time and plan to work out in the early mornings, don't join this gym. At least once a week during the work week and on weekends as well, whoever is suppose to come open up fails to arrive. Today several of us were standing around in front for an hour waiting for someone to arrive. 3 people left after 30 minutes. The kids the owner hires don't care about the members, don't care that working people are on a SCHEDULE, don't care that a member might be training for an athletic event and HAS to be at the gym at a certain time. I guess it doesn't matter to the owner either. Because lots of members have complained or brought it to his attention and he does nothing. Is this any way to run a business??? We will be giving our money to another gym, one that we can count on to be open when it says it will be open. Also, the young guys who hang out at this gym never put their weights away and it is never enforced. Gym ettiquette is not known in this business. So if you enjoy going to a machine and 3 times your bodyweight is piled on the machine and you have to remove other people's weights just to use it, then by all means join. I would not recommend this gym to anyone. Join a gym where they actually care about the members.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Does not open on time, weights all over the place

A basic, no-frills neighborhood gym with good free weights, strength-training machines, cardio, sauna and hot pool for a low, no-contract monthly fee ($35 presently). The locker rooms are a little rustic but so what? --they work. Nice people working out here too and a friendly desk staff. Never seen it crowded. I like it and go more regularly than I ever did at Golds. You wanna show off your designer sweats and socialize, there are better places. You wanna buff up--go here.

If you want a gym with no bells and whistles, just the basics for a reasonable prize, this is the gym for you. Classes, machines, free weights, cardio, sauna and spa - what else do you need. If you want the bells and whistles and want to pay the extra money then go to a chain, but if you want to workout in a comfortable atmosphere then you'll love Alameda Athletic Club.

Pros: Great value

Cons: No pool
