I've had lunch at Somerset several times and it was always good, I've often recommended it to friends. But we took three people last night and all agreed we would not go back, we were very disappointed. Everything had way too much salt. The serving of duck breast was very small as were the other entrees.

I am shocked by the previous review. I have been going to Miss Millie's with my boyfriend, now husband, and once-baby, now two-year-old and 2nd baby. The owner, Gary, is the reason I keep going back. He is the warmest, most friendly and genuinely engaging restaurateur I know. And I find that it trickles down to his staff. We are recognized and greeted warmly by people who were bussers for years and now have been waiters for years. Maybe they were having a bad night, or that wasn't Gary is was someone else? In any event, I'd highly recommend that you try it again. Plus there's all that wonderful food!

Pros: service, food, atmosphere are all wonderful

Cons: moved to the east bay!

Somerset is a superb culinary addition to the Rockridge neighborhood. With attentive, friendly staff, generous cocktails, and delicious food, it is a favorite of mine and many other locals. while the atmosphere is casual, families with children would be better suited to dine across the street at either the well known burger or pizza establishment. While at Somerset, try the black mission fig with port reduction appetizer. The fried chicken is amazing, and for desert, the turtle sunday will leave you with a huge smile on your face.

my wife and i went in to this restaurant around 6:00 recently with our twin 3 year old boys. while we go out to eat a couple times a week and thus our kids are used to it, we're still hesitant to bring them in if the place doesn't want them. therefore we asked before being seated (in a completely empty restaurant) if it was ok, and were assured by the hostess that it was no problem. our boys sat and ate there bread and calamari before our entrees were brought out. while they were not quiet as a schoolboy (they are kids), they were certainly well behaved and appropriate for the environment as they have been so many times before. just before our food was served the owner came by and told us that our kids are going to have to quiet down and behave- this is a restaurant. we both thought he was joking, but as he continued to berate us it was clear that he was just a complete fool. by this time there were a couple other tables seated. he then sent over his manager to tell us that other tables had complained about us (we had actually talked with some of them, and they enjoyed our kids). i couldn't belive he sent someone else to do his bidding. he essentially threatened us to leave, but insisted that we pay for the food (i have no idea if it was any good, since it was brought to us in the middle of this fiasco). based on the unbelievably rude nature of the owner (he is a true a**), not suprised this place wasn't too busy. you would have thought he was running the french laundry or something, not a casual eatery in rockridge. he should take note of his clientele walking around that neighborhood- lots of families. maybe the food is good- i just wouldn't waste my time supporting a restaurant that treats customers in such a demeaning way.

Editor's Review

Hungry locals gather at this neighborhood spot for its infamous brunches and huge portions of upscale American classics.  See the full editorial review.
