Don't believe the hype. Took a date here, and was very disappointed. Sushi wasn't as fresh. Sashimi was okay. Looked like a lot of staffers with nothing to do.
Good sushi, fun staff.
My wife and I visited on a Saturday after taking in a movie, around 6p. The place is small, but wasn't too packed at this point. We decided to sit at the bar nonetheless, prefering to be close to the
chefs and see the fish firsthand. Since it wasn't too busy, the staff were joking around, and we played along making the short wait for our food go by quickly.
We had the sushi combo, which included yellowtail, two types of tuna, a California roll, salmon, and shrimp. All the fish was fresh, and the pieces of good size. I also ordered herring, expecting something like the raw herring one can get all over in Holland. It was cooked, and disappointing. (Should have asked.)
Overall, though pricier than Get-a, another local sushi place, I'd say it was worth it.…
Great Food, Great Service. Went here for the first time this past week. Food was served quickly and was fresh and tasty. Can't wait to return!
Old world charm & service. Always-flowing sake!. A visit here is like dinner with dear old friends. Coach and his wife must have time-traveled to Lake Merrit direct from ancient Japanse palaces. Regular clients get their own wooden sushi drinking box -- decorated and displayed on the walls. Watch out! Coach is fond of sneaking up and refilling sake when your eyes are turned. The fish is superb, and new menu items appear monthly. Last night Japanese sweet potato was among our tempura items. Fabulous! Since discovering Coach, we won't go anywhere else.…
A Hidden Gem.
It is very difficult to find real sushi restaurants. Many of the restaurants I have experienced are either hyped too much or they are just mediocre at best (with a limited menu). I went here with a
friend who lives close by. The service was fantastic, the fish was VERY fresh, and, the menu was expansive (we were able to get kama (fish head) upon request, there is a great tofu selection, and a selection of nigiri and sashimi that I haven't seen in any other place around here).
The proprietor is friendly, greets everyone warmly, and is very customer-oriented...sake was refilled, we were never rushed and he was very personable with us. On one hand, I want to keep this discovery to myself; but on the other, the great food and friendly service (which is not so common these days) we received is something people should know about.
Great place!…
