Awesome Cajun/Creole Food & TONS of Powder Sugar for Beignet
by mejennings
Great food, great customer service, & enough powder sugar on your biegnets to last you into the next year! I'm sooo glad to have finally made it over to Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen this past Sun (around 5:30pm) for my birthday weekend!
LOCATION: We parked in the garage parking just around the corner on Kittridge St ($4 flat rate) simply because we didn't feel like driving around to find parking. Greeted upon entrance & party of 4 got seated immediately. The restaurant isn't really large...probably around 8 4-seater-tables & another 8 2-seater-tables. Table & chairs are workable, but my bf sat across from his dad & they kept bumping their feet w/ each other. The 4-seater-tables, inner chairs had no arm rest whereas outter chairs did...might make a difference for those who prefer/need no arm rests.
SERVICE: Just great! Our waiter-Anthony was thorough checking in on us. We did notice tho, he gave straws to only me & bf who ordered drinks other than H20; the parents had to put in a request ;-) BF dropped a spoon (not enuf elbow space @ the table for him really), Anthony's colleague instantly comes in to pick up the spoon & hands off new/clean spoon to bf (not bad, right!) Even upon finishing up our meals, nice woman (heak could've been Angeline) came over to ask how was our experience & hopes we come back. As dad said, "The food definitely has 'come-back-ability'"
FOOD: GREAT! Already have plans of other items we'd like to try *tee-hee*! I had the Strawberry Lemonade & bf had "Swamp Water" (half lemonade & half ice tea) both have free refills *kudos*; mine's cool, taste like it had soda or sparkling sumthin' in there...Swamp Water is a good recommendation for those who like unsweeten tea I think. Apps were Grilled Boudin Sausage & Hush Puppies both were good, especially Hush Puppies w/ Honey Butter *yummy* Moms had Penne Pasta; she enjoyed that there was chckn practically w/ every bite of pasta. BF & pops had Cajun Mixed Grill..I tasted this & everything was great! The potato salad had mini red potatoes & my goodness it was reeally cold *kudos* I had (ahem) the Voo Doo Shrimp also a great dish! Think I would've preferred more rice w/ the sauce from the shrimp, but that's just meeh. Everything gets a recommendation!
DESSERT/BIEGNETS: All I can say ladies is it's completely OK to have a lil' white stuff around your mouth area ...that is if you're eating these delicious hot/fresh beignets! Get in here & try 'em! Scrum-didly-umptous!!!
Final tab for 2 drinks, 2 apps, 4 entrees, & 2 desserts...$95 bucks & some change. While enjoying our meals we saw plenty of other plates coming outta the kitchen to other patrons: Shrimp Po'Boy Sandwiches, Jambalaya, Rib Eye Steak & Shrimp, Fried Chkn & Sweet Mashed Potatoes, & more. Yes, we will be back!
- Pros: Good portion sizes & overal pricing $10-$18 quite reasonable
- Cons: Restaurant deserves a larger location
Great food, great service-nice change

We went here on a Saturday at 6:30. I thought we would wait a long time to be seated but it only took a few minutes. From there, the service was very attentive (in a good way). I had the jambalaya which was very flavorful and had a nice heat. The sausage was a tad bit over cooked but not a major issue. My wife had the fried chicken which was excellent as well. We started with hush puppies, which were delicious. The sweet tea was a bit sweet but it didn't taste like regular sugar. I think maybe they use cane sugar. In any case, it was a nice experience and nice to try a different type of cuisine. I highly recommend it.
- Pros: excellent food, good service
- Cons: no parking in downtown Berkeley (a given). small restaurant, can get crowded
Worst service EVER!
by gottauseaname
Overall, the experience was NOT a good one. Took my mom there for her birthday on a Monday night, had a reservation and STILL had to wait twenty minutes! The person who took our drink orders never returned, and the second person who took them returned (seriously) a half an hour later! When we ordered our drinks, we also ordered the hushpuppies and again, we were made to wait almost an HOUR before our appetizer arrived. The table seated next to us got their ENTREE'S before we got our appetizers and they sat down a half an hour after us! We continually asked about the delay and were told serveral times that our food would be "out in just a sec"! We made the mistake of ATTEMPTING to order our dinner's and were told that several (meaning SIX) of the item's were not on the menu including the rice and bean's, which they only serve on Monday's.???????? Our reservation was for six o'clock so how they could be out of the rice and beans is beyond me........moving on, our dinner's took for-EVER! We were seated at 6:20 and did not get up to leave until 8:50! This is not the type of place that one would expect to linger for two and a half hours! Unfortunately, the food was very good but the entire experience was one I never want to replicate so in conclusion, it would be a cold day in hell before I EVER retun to this establishment! Oh, by the way, no parking and the wait staff is nice until they mess up and then, you become the enemy! ENJOY!
- Pros: good tasting food
- Cons: EVERYTHING ELSE
Tasty, Generous Portions of Creole/Cajun Cookin'
by damian_esq
Though far from an expert on Creole/Cajun cuisine, I thought that the food at this restaurant was really good. The Fried Cheese Grits with Crawfish Etoufee appetizer is NOT to be missed. I went with two other friends and we all enjoyed our dinners. I had the Creole Shrimp which consisted of 8+ big perfectly cooked prawns in a zesty (not too spicy) tomato based sauce over rice. The other two had the Jambalaya, which was fairly large and also very tasty - only got one shrimp though :-( . The pecan pie was decent, but not amazing. The fried chicken and Po'Boy sandwiches looked and smelled great. Hush puppies were served with honey butter, and while the butter was delicious, the hush puppies themselves were just ok.
Definitely make a reservation (by 7:10 pm there was a line out the door).
Our server was very nice and informative, but WAY over worked. Maybe it was because we were sitted just after a party of 11, but the service was quite slow initially. Once we got our food, we were happy and had no complaints.
- Pros: Tasty Food, Good Portions, Nice Waiters
- Cons: Parking's a headache, Kinda Loud, Slow Service
Yummy Louisiana fare
by gdbc
We ate here after the big game. The wait staff were very friendly and helpful. We had the VooDoo shrimp and it was AMAZING! We also had the fried catfish with hush puppies, another good choice. The only thing we didn't care for was the Seared Ahi-- I just don't think they've perfected their recipe. The only down side is they don't have a liquor license yet. A nice glass of wine would go nicely (although several customers found a way around this dilemma). Overall, a very pleasant experience. The meal was farely inexpensive and we'll definitely go back!
- Pros: great service, reasonably price, yummy food
