Best pizza in Berkeley. Why? Best quality cheese, great sauce, excellent crust and toppings. My favorite is the mushroom.

Great Brooklyn Style Pizza
by kmbcb
Made by a New Yorker, favorably reviewed by New Yorkers, great Brooklyn style (the best) pizza, better than much of the pizza I've had in Manhattan...kwitchyerbitchin' and eatchyer slice.
- Pros: Cheaper than a flight to New York.
- Cons: Closed on Mondays
Great pizza but...
by chickenbone
The pizza here is very tasty. However, I feel like the place is a bit "pizza nazi"-ish. They only have a few selections and you aren't allowed to substitute or do a half/half pizza. They give you a time slot to pick up your pizza, take it or leave. When I was in the store, some walk ins were told that the limited slices at the counter were all they had and that was it. (it was only 6:30) I asked if they had any take out menus and was given a flat "no". (I was going to give them to my friends because the pizza is good but I guess that won't happen now.) Also, the pizza is a bit pricey. I think they need to balance the need to run their business their way with good customer service and building the customer base.
Most Authentic NY-Style Pizza Around
by angelita8
As an East Coast/NY transplant, I was pretty disappointed with the pizza choices in the Bay Area when I moved here. That is, until Gioia opened up. They're simply THE BEST, most authentic, NY-style pizza around. Amen!
Simply the best

Best pizza I've ever had (and I've had plenty), combined with a very friendly staff. I'll be back....often.
Flavorful and fresh

Gioia's menu may not be huge and their seating is definitely limited (small counter with stools), but they sure know how to turn out a tasty pie! They use high-quality ingredients, and it pays off. Even their plain cheese pizza tastes special. Their mushroom pizza is the most flavorful mushroom pizza I have ever had--tastes like the mushrooms were just freshly picked from the woods.
Gourmet toppings and thin crusts will please both adventuresome California pizza aficionados and NY slice fans.

In Short
This hole-in-the-wall shop, decorated with pictures of old NYC pizzerias, is a popular destination for both college kids and lunchtime work crowds. The West Coast-style organic-flour crust is rolled ultra thin and slightly charred on the sides and bottom. The mozzarella cheese barely covers the bubbling hot paste made from ripe plum tomatoes. The toppings range from Brooklyn basics, like pepperoni, to exotic Cali cuisine like the arugula, pesto and prosciutto pie.
Maybe the best pizza outside New York
by hezmodo
This is pizza the way it should be; dripping with just enough delicious tomato sauce, interesting specials you wouldn't even think of, and a beautiful crust -- thin, crisp, begging to be folded in half and eaten New York style. I don't understand why no one else can get the crust right like this, but that's how it is. Unfortunately, at least by the slice, this place is way overpriced. The slices should be twice the size, given what they charge. Even as I get to a place where I don't have to look at prices so much when I eat out, I can't ever order more than a slice at a time because it costs so much. I didn't use to think I was a skin flint, but I feel like I get a much better deal at Zachary's, even if the (thin crust) pizza isn't quite as divine. Still, if you can swallow the price, you'll love swallowing this pizza. It's amazing.
- Pros: Divine pizza, interesting toppings, amazing crust.
- Cons: Way too costly, at least by the slice, no place to sit
