Lake Merritt wine bar provides a more adult setting to its neighboring kid-friendly Zza's Trattoria.
by Contributor at Citysearch
In Short
The flashing red and white lights of the sign for its adjacent sister trattoria also call attention to this, the adult counterpart. Cozy tables give the place more of a cafe feel than a bar vibe. However, the concept comes across loud and clear once the list of more than 50 wines from around the world is scanned. Those not feeling the vino yen may opt for soju cocktails, and Mediterranean-inspired small plates, pizzas and desserts are available as accompaniments.
Best Italian now opened wine bar!
by monsok64 at Citysearch
I'd reccomend this place to anyone who loves Italian food. This is the best stuff around. Everything is so fresh. They just opened a wine bar next door. It's really modern and a great addition to Oakland. It's totally not overpriced, either.
- Pros: Food, Wine Bar, Service
They still have it!
by berryh26 at Citysearch
I've been going to Zza's for years now. And they still have it! The food is so good, and the staff is really helpful and friendly. When I go in with my nephews, the servers are really accomodating. And when I go in on a Friday night with my date, they make it very romantic and seat us next to the front window. I hear they are opening a wine bar next door, and I can't wait. If their wine is as good as their pasta, then I'll be there all the time!
- Pros: Pasta, Good for kids, good location
Work Lunch
by fairalex at Citysearch
My boss took our team out for lunch last week for our department holiday party. Zza's was wonderful. It was my first time, and the food was great. They have the best shrimp pasta I've ever had. Everyone in our group loved the service. The staff was so kind and accomodating. I can't wait to return!
- Pros: Seated promptly, parking was easy, great food
My Fiance Loves this Place
by robijoeson at Citysearch
I just got engaged and moved to Oakland from SF. My fiance and I tried Zza's for the first time the other day. ANd it is AWESOME. THe food is fantastic. The service was great. The flashing lights are so much fun, yet it is still romantic. I felt like I was somewhere totally new and different. And I hear they are opening a wine bar next door. I cna't wait for that!
- Pros: Food, Service, Wine
Best Pasat in Town
by clarenm at Citysearch
I have lived in Oakland for 6 years, and Zza's is my new favorite spot. Ever since the owndership changed, the place is so much fun! The pasta is to die for. I love the Rotelle. It's probably the best pasta I"ve ever had, and my grandmother was Italitan!
- Pros: Pasta, Service, Wine
New Family Favorite
by jensam at Citysearch
I heard Zza's was a great place for dinner, but I needed a place for lunch on Sunday. I took my family here, and everyone loved it. Even the kids. My husband has ordered delivery three times since we've eaten there. This is our new family favorite! And it's inexpensive.
- Pros: Kid Friendly, Attentive Staff, Fresh food
- Cons: Can be busy on wekends
YUM!
by lickityum at Citysearch
After moving from San Francisco to the East bay I was looking for a new favorite restaurant and stumbled upon Zza's after going to the Grand Lake movie theater. I had the special whole crab with fresh pasta and felt like I was back in the city. This is my new favorite spot in Oakland but instead of having a view of the Bay Bridge I had an excellent view of the Lake!
- Pros: View of the Lake, Yummy food, Great wine
- Cons: Crowded
True Italian Food by the Lake.

The Munchie Man
ZZA'S has great food, great wine, and a really cool view of the lake. I am still licking my fingers from the especial pizza with smoked bacon, mash potatoes, truffle oil and zucchini. The ZZAS light sign that blinked in the background reminded me and my girlfriend of being in Vegaswe got a kick out the waiter yelling across the roomLights Please! You got to check this place out for yourself. I highly recommend ZZAS. I will be back again next week for my girlfriend Birthday Party!
- Pros: True Italian Food, Not to Fancy, Cool Vibe
- Cons: Busy
Seriously - try someplace else

I was utterly disappointed in ZZA's. The hostess was incredibly nice and cheerful, but other than her, the experience was very subpar. Oakland just may not have a great Italian restaurant. ZZA's should send their staff to North Beach to learn the business.
- Pros: location
- Cons: flickering lights, bland food, tired staff
