Terrific Mexican food in a 'lost in time' town.
As my sister said (settling into a combination plate we shared) "this is the kind of place there used to be hundreds of when we used to take a road trip vacation with Mom and Dad, before everything became part of a chain".
As evidenced by the number of locals and visitors alike, the New Mecca is justifiably popular. We did arrive at peak time, and had to wait about 20 minutes, but during that time dozens of people came to pick up to go orders, and tables turned fairly quickly. If we had arrived half an hour earlier or later, we would probably not have needed to wait at all.
The chile rellenos, chorizo taco and enchilada were very good. I enjoyed the bean dip (although clearly not as much as another reviewer!) but found the salsa to be delicious, pleasantly spicy.
My husband enjoyed his tongue, and although I'm not a fan of offal, the red chille sauce it came in was delicious.
New Mecca is going on our list of 'must stops' if we are in the neighborhood again. Conveniently located at the Railroad Ave exit off Highway 4, this one is a gem.
The best hole in the wall mexican restaurant EVER. All I can say is I love this place. Everyone I know loves this place. It's proabably one of the only reasons I do to Downtown Pittsburg. Some friends and I went to a mexican restaurant in Oakland just to try it out. Well to make a long story short, when we got back to Pittsburg we went to New Mecca to really eat. I guess that's what we get for trying to be adventurous.
local landmark.
It's a landmark in Pittsburg, and worth a trip down Railroad Ave. to Old Town Marina District.
Food from the New Mecca kept me going over a lot of life's speedbumps.
Been going here for chicken tacos, enchiladas & adovada for over 30 years.
Previous review hit the mark- for lots of folks who move away, this is one of the first stops upon return to NoCal. I've never heard anyone say they were sorry they chose the New Mecca- but don't forget they're closed on Wednesday.
I wish i was home. The food, i have been eating since i was little, now i live in virginia, The last time i got to eat at the Mecca was in 99. The first place i wanted to go when i got off the plane was to The Mecca. But, we got there on a Wednesday so we had to wait until the next day. We got there bright and early for a Cop Special and some tacos. Oh how i missed the bean dip and chips, oh my goodness, and the salsa, and oh how i miss it now. I wish they delivered across country. My mom and i talk about this place all the time, then we settle for the virginia Mexican restaurants, they're ok. But just not The Mecca.
