Hunan tough-meat. Frankly, I think the eatery is over-rated. The owner has another restaurant in Pinole - Pear Street Bistro - which is much better, personally. The ambiance at Hunan Villa is average. Techno/retro/art-deco is the decorum, along with a humungus Buddha bust, which doesn't really blend with the theme. The meat (pork and beef) was rather tough and chewy. It could have been tenderized longer. The cocktails were adequate - mock versions of apple-martini and cosmos, rice-wine (aka sake) substituting vodka. I'd rather eat at the Pear Street Bistro.
User review by kirbybeby. For as long as I lived in the area, it was hard to find a place to eat with my boyfriend. But that was until his sister had recommended us here. The owner and manager are very social. The food is excellent in taste, service is fast and friendly, and they have take out as well. And although its prices have risen, everything else in the restaurant always seems to level it out. Its a place that should expand its franchise all over the bay area. I truly recommend this restaurant!
no second time. I am new to this area. So my boyfriend brought me here. At first it seems like a nice restaurant. The service is not good. We are still eating but the server wants to take our unfinished plate. The price is a little bit high for a small serving. The portion of their food is only good for sampling. But a nice place to drink and chat.
Best Chinese food in the East Bay. I have eaten at over 40 Chinese restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have eaten at more than 20 native restaurants in Mainland China. Hunan Villa is the most authentic Hunan-style Chinese restaurant in the East Bay and exceeds the quality of several "high-end" Chinese restaurants in San Francisco.
What happened ; P ???. Before the renovations a few years ago this restaurant had great food at a great value. Now it is like I hate to say-- a fun house. The atmosphere does not seem to be geared towards families but business people trying to reah the past. The portion sizes have shrunk and the prices have skyrocketed. Strangely enough the waitstaff seem to remain the same. The place is busy so maybe it is just not for me.
