Editorial Review for Zax Tavern – by Richard Tate

In Short
This is high-end California dining, featuring a menu of reliably well-prepared dishes. The upscale restaurant and bar draws a crowd of well-heeled locals. Three rooms--two filled with intimate tables, a third with a marble-top bar and miscellaneous seating--are decorated with sleek cherry-wood veneer and colored glass lights. Service is friendly and efficient, ensuring an enjoyable night out.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Drop-ins usually snag a spot at the bar, but the experience doesn't do the place justice. When you call, ask for a table in the second or third room, away from the bustling bar and kitchen.

What to Drink

Order a specialty martini with Hangar One vodka, a hard-to-find Alameda-made brand with a smooth, crisp taste that's worth trying.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

First time in this place loved it, the decor, food, atmosphere. Would highly recommend the goat cheese souffle (heavenly!) and the short ribs.

1 Star Rating: Not Recommended

The food (halibut, lamb kabobs) was almost inedible. The kabobs, for example, sat on cold (I mean cold) Garbanzo beans and the feta cheese was all but missing from the plate. They ran out of the specialty dessert (cobbler). Abmience was OK, but the tables for four were crowded. Service was horrible...slow and inattentive, no specials for the day were offered. Finally, the price...you've got to be kidding...$200 for four? For what...certainly wasn't quality and the quantity was barely adequate. Would NOT recommend Jax for any reason.

Pros: None

Cons: Price, Food Quality, Sevice
