Editorial Review for Wine Club – by Richard Tate

The Scene
In operation since the mid '80s, the Wine Club is housed in three retail stores in California and does a booming online business as well. Aside from the astoundingly large selection of reasonably priced wines, the stark interior of the San Francisco location is unremarkable: fluorescent lighting, cardboard boxes, handwritten signs. When you visit, be sure to engage one of the sales staff; they're incredibly knowledgeable and more than happy to help with suggestions.

The Goods
Rare finds and stacks of value wines from all over the world make the Club a favorite of serious wine connoisseurs, and you don't need a membership to shop. Prices are often well-below usual retail, with lots of good bottles available for less than $10. The selection includes wines and champagnes from countries in Europe, Australia, and North and South America. Stemware, books, decanters, caviar and cigars are also available for purchase.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Tastings are usually offered every Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. For $5 to $25, guests can sample featured wines from various regions and wineries.

Know Before You Go

If you're in the store and see something you like, buy two bottles. What's in the store today won't necessarily be there tomorrow. Serious wine shoppers can buy futures and pre-arrivals through the store's newsletter or website.

The Wine Club is an amazing retail wine shop in a warehouse almost under Highway 80 in SOMA. It has an excellent collection of California wines and does very well with Burgandy and Bourdeax. The prices are consistantly 10 to 20 percent below other merchants in the area.

Pros: good prices, huge selection, long hours

Cons: location
