Editorial Review for Boulevard – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
Soft light filters through the bustling dining room, illuminating art-nouveau details like sculptured light sconces and mosaic floors. The Embarcadero location means an expense-account crowd at lunchtime, with locals and gourmet-minded visitors enjoying the sparkling Bay Bridge views at night.

The Food

Exceptional appetizers are the stars of chef Nancy Oakes' seasonal menu. Depending on the time of year, dishes might include a fried squash blossom stuffed with ricotta, paired beautifully with a roasted porcini mushroom, dabs of pesto and tomato vinaigrette. Scallops topped by Dungeness crab salad rest on an artichoke puree surrounded by lemon-butter sauce. Entrees can be uneven: A superb grilled lamb chop joins an underdone roasted lamb loin, while a New York steak with portobello mushroom dwarfs the accompanying potatoes and green beans. Better balanced is petrale sole with fava beans and marinated baby fennel.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Solo diners can sit at the counter and watch the chefs at work in the exhibition kitchen.

What to Drink

The 500-bottle list can be intimidating; ask for a recommendation. Boulevard prides itself on top-notch wine service.

Where to Sit

When making reservations--and you should, well in advance--ask for a table in back, with a view of the Bay Bridge. It's quieter and romantic.

food was good. the place was spacious, but tables are too near with each other that it tends to look crowded when they have a lot of guests.tends to be noisy too. i liked the salmon i ordered but my husband didn't like his lamb. service was average. our experience was good but not great with this resto.

This is one of the most overrated restaurants! Please please please do not waste your $ (and you'll waste quite a bit at this overpriced, tasteless restaurant!). I'm not quite sure why others have rated it so high, but let me just say that from start to finish, this meal was horrible. The mojitos were totally watered down--NO alcohol! Once we sat down, the menu looked really good so we decided to order an appetizer.... the pheasant ravioli. Well, this app was $18.50 and we received 3 very small raviolis... pretty pathetic. And it's not like the flavor made up for the small portion in the least! It was horrible! I then ordered the sea bass and my husband ordered the filet mignon. When we received our entrees, we were so unbelievably disappointed. My sea bass was completely flavorless and atop some watered down, bland risotto. Oh, and the fish weighed in at about 4 whole ounces. My husband's $42 filet tasted like top sirloin--chewy and over cooked. Don’t get me wrong, I don't mind small portions if the flavor makes up for it. Needless to say we did not look at the dessert menu. In fact, we got our check, paid the outrageous bill, and went straight to Little Italy in North Beach for some fabulous gnocchi and gelato!!! With so many amazing restaurants in San Francisco, please don't waste your time, money, and taste buds at this horrifically overpriced, bland restaurant!

Pros: NONE

Cons: terrible food (taste and portion size), drinks, price, noisy due to open kitchen
