Editorial Review for Chancellor Hotel on Union Square – by By Gayot.com
The Scene
This boutique hotel was built in 1914 in Edwardian style and is located near the Powell Street cable car line. Set among giant palms, it feels like an icon leftover from grander days. The property was renovated at the turn f the millennium. Updates include soft green tones and vintage patterned fabrics. The fabulous Union Square setting makes this a great place for shopaholics and upscale sightseers.
The Details
High ceilings accentuate the spacious feel of the lobby, while large windows in the guest rooms offer fine views of the city. The 137 rooms include all the basics, from personal safes to hair dryers. The tubs and showers are particularly generous in size. Suites are bathed in soft hues and feature wrought-iron beds. Luques Restaurant and Bar is a popular hangout, located adjacent to the lobby. Parking isn't the most convenient, since the garage is spendy and valet services close at night.

The location can't get any better. You're in downtown first of all and next to a transportation hub that can take you anywhere else in the city you'd like to go. I personally did not stay in the hotel, my parents did while visiting. Their room was small, but cozy. My thoughts on the rooms are second hand, but my parents raved about it saying that it was quite and friendly. My expertise on the Chancellor comes from the ground floor cocktail lounge. It is the BEST place to unwind after work! It's small but so classy and cozy, relaxing with great jazz softly playing. Drink prices are moderate for downtown. Alicia and Rex are the best! Always welcoming, always friendly. And excellent at making drinks! Just a charming little unassuming spot that always makes me feel right at home :)
Pros: Great lounge, friendly staff!
Cons: None for me!

The Chancellor Hotel has a great location, surrounded by shopping and more shopping. It is on the cablecar line so no need to rent a car or even take a taxi. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance, take the cablecar to Fisherman's Warf to spend the day shopping. China Town is within walking distance for more shopping with many great restaurants. There is a seven tier mall approximately 3 blocks from the Chancellor Hotel. The staff was very friendly, rooms are somewhat small, but most are in San Francisco. They had great little touches like homemade cookies and fresh popcorn and even a little rubber ducky while you relax in the spaceous bathtub with bath salts after you spent the day shopping. They even have a pillow menu, yes a pillow menu. I had them bring up at least five different pillows for me to try. I definately recommend this hotel, and can't wait to return to San Francisco. Did I mention the shopping is fabulous and all within walking distance.... Louis Vuitton, Coach, Saks, Macys, Gucci, Tiffany's, Neiman Marcus and Sephora need I go on????
Pros: Location, great staff
Cons: none
