With muted earth tones, an open kitchen, and large portraits of jazz icons on the walls, Kuwa manages to exude a lounge-y feel despite its sprawling space in downtown Oakland. Offering a self-described fusion of Caribbean and Southern cuisines, Kuwa's menu ranges from Louisiana chicken and andouille sausage gumbo to jambalaya shrimp and grits; it also includes spiced-up versions of traditional comfort foods like mac and cheese and a large selection of small plates like sweet potato fries and "low & slow" baby back ribs. Weekday evenings are often slow, but it's a popular lunchtime spot, and live music makes it hopping on Friday and Saturday nights.
