Housed in what was formerly Jordan's, the new Meritage at the Claremont--presided over by former French Laundry chef Josh Thomsen--emphasizes the relationship between wine and food. Every dish has a suggested wine pairing, and each one, from the Castroville artichoke soup to the Niman Ranch filet mignon, is available in a full- or half-size serving. The space itself has been thoroughly redone into three distinct sections: a wood-accented lounge that's reminiscent of a study; a black-and-white tiled bar area, and the main dining room, with a plush carpet, new booths, and the Claremont's famous view of the Bay. High-ceilinged and decorated with tall ferns, the main dining room feels like a palm court, adding an air of formality often lacking in the Bay Area--if you feel like dressing up for dinner, this is a good spot to go.
