Old warehouse turned bar / restaurant with sunny happy hour patio. Fabulous calamari, drinks, local beer. Great for groups or just alone.
My Last time here. My last experience @ MUA was not one that I would have ever expected from the Manager and the Owner!!! I remember when they first opened and business was slow but we were there for you, I remember many nights anywhere between 15 to 30 members dropping $30.00 bucks on drinks alone and $15.00 for a burger and fries or the chicken gumbo that you use to serve!!! Yeah we had been around for some time now to be treated in such a manner. On Sept. 5 we had a gathering for the founder of our group and the person responsible for the relationship that was forged between our group and MUA but tonight I was never so insulted in my life. It was about 38 of our members at this event and from the moment we walked through the door we are buying drinks and food as usual and we were allowed to have a spot in the back upstairs and we made the best of it, but when one of our organizers arrived with 40 cupcakes and that when things went south.. I understand that you had problems with other customers’ that have rented your space out before and brought their own food and alcohol!!! I’m sorry but that was not done by our group but someone you made that contract with but our group had spent at least $300.00 bucks on drinks walking through the door and we ordered so much food $15.00 per Burger for you to demand a cake charge of $2.00 per person for cupcakes!! I mean not even an offer of a flat rate, the cupcakes didn’t even cost us more than $22.00 and he wanted to charge us $76.00 just for having them and told to leave and that he was going to call the police!!! We gathered our group and we removed ourselves from MUA and went down the street to Mimosas who welcomed us with open arms. I still can’t believe that they were going to call the police over a $76.00 cake charge!!! MUA you have insulted me to the max and I am prepared to share this story with the rest of my friends that also work in the Hospitality business right here in the bay. I strongly believe we could have resolved easily without threats of calling the police!!!! This will make an interesting story for The East Bay Expess, S.F. Weekly the Better Bussines folks and The Oakland Chamber of Commerce just for starters!!!
MUA Lounge in Oakland is m'kay.
BF-Jayson & I out for a Saturday night in SF for a Jazz & symphony combo of music w/ Chris Botti, then made our way over back to the other side of the bridge & stopped off @ MUA Lounge in Oakland about midnight to meet up w/ some friends. I can say that me wearin' 3-inch heels worked against for the evening by the time we arrived here.
LOCATION: On Webster right off of Broadway btw 25th & 26th St...next to a car & bike shop. Possible to drive past it @ night since it's not really lite up, so be on the look out for it. Street parking, so good luck...we arrived about just a lil' b4 midnight & parked about 5-6 blocks away...my feet were really pi$$ed @ me =( Bouncer greets & opens door, upon entrance bar immediately straight ahead on right side & flight of stairs on left for 2nd level dinning area. U want to eat at a table, good luck finding one m'kay...no hostess @ this time of the night.
CROWD: Both bar & dinning areas were crazy packed in this place! Ideal for anyone looking "for the spot" to scout out some honies (guy/gal), but for us...too crowded. 2-way traffic @ the bar area against folks standing on the wall & those @ the bar, so plenty of bumping w/ "excuse me, "my bad", yada yada yada. Hip 25-40yr old folks w/ more sound of the crowd than music or TV...at least from bar area.
TASTE: From the bar, a friend had whiskey that taste like whiskey, but BF-Jayson had Pineapple Martini that was "soft"; he didn't order another drink. Coming from a Jazz concert & making it here, I'm terribly hungry...@ the bar, BF ordered Appetizer Shrimp just to sample something; 5 pieces of seasoned shrimp that gave us a pinch of hunger satisfaction, but was overpriced in my eyes so I didn't want us to spend anymore money on food here.
END OF THE NIGHT: $10 on martini, & got $1 more in change...$10 for shrimp app, & got $2 more in change. I mean it WAS busy, but all bartenders need to be a human calculator under pressure...not sure how many other folks got more change than expected this Sat night. Did we return the extra change...hell to the naw! Come on now folks. My feet that started out in my 3-inch heels as Corgie puppies turned into Rottweiler adults by 1:30am & were barking LOUD! I won't do that again. Not sure this couple here, Mary & Jayson, will rush to come back even though it really does draw in a nice crowd & we have friends who really enjoy this spot. Sorry MUA =(
