Top grade sushi, Japanese cuisine and a bar scene in Uptown..
At the heart of Oakland's nightlife-packed Uptown district, this sushi bar, sake lounge and robata grill brings the same upscale scene and outstanding fish as its SF counterpart. Stone, water, wood and glass elements make for an elegant Zen setting that includes a bar, casual and formal seating areas in an almost warehouse-sized space. Speaking of size, because the two Ozumo restaurants go through so much fish, the chefs get the first pick of the shipments that arrive daily from Japan--in the Bay Area, perhaps only Sushi Ran and Kiss have better quality fish--which makes for some sublime sashimi. It also makes for some punishing prices, but Ozumo Oakland actually has noticeably lower prices than the SF version (there aren't quite as many big-spending bigshots over there) and the same amazing food. For the few people out there who don't love sushi, there's a full menu of Izakaya, and for sake-philes, over 90 varieties of rice wine.

Editorial Review.
Well-rendered Japanese cuisine and elegant decor keep this new Oakland fine-dining spot on par with its Embarcadero counterpart.
