Excellent food and atmosphere. I am Korean and really enjoyed the food. We liked this place for a number of reasons. It is clean, well-maintained with friendly staff and a very comfortable feel. More importantly, the food was delicious, the tables and seats were very clean and comfortable. We ordered the ribs and a seafood soup and they did not disappoint. They served no less than 11 side dishes. Tea was plentiful and they served a cool sweet cinnamon tea for a finisher. We'll definitely go back next time we're in SF.
Great family style Korean restaurant. The dishes on the menu are expertly prepared and served hot (piping and spicy). The usual array of pickles, kimchee, dried fish, and prepared tofu, are served with every meal. They are the only Korean restaurant, that I know of so far, that serves black goat stew. If you aren?t familiar with the Korean version of this dish, note that it is made with lots of spices, especially cracked mustard seeds. It is an excellent choice on a cool evening or if your energy just seems a little low. My boyfriend loves the mung bean pancakes and the spicy pork. You?ll be seated at big chucky wooden tables. During the week there are quite a few families with kids. If you are uncertain of anything, just ask the staff and they will help you navigate the expansive menu. When in doubt, try the spicy pork.
Solid Korean home-style cooking across the board..
In Short
Sure the food is good, but Sahn Maru earns just as many points for the smiling middle-aged servers who make you feel like you're at home with your loving Korean mom (who also happens to be an amazing, accommodating cook). Service is fast, food is ample and tasty, and the repertoire is simple, home cooking. No frills, straightforward, and a great family spot.
