Editorial Review for Franklin Square Wine Bar – by Kirstin Jackson Ellis
In Short
True, the decor could use a boost, but the varied wine list and well-priced small plates are drawing people to an area long in need in need of a gastronomic drinking spot. With a food menu featuring such goodies as marcona almonds, tartines, broiled butter fish and foie gras, customers are coming just as often to nibble as they do to indulge in glasses, half glasses, or carafes of wine.

I really wanted this place to be great, but I was sadly let down. We entered the bar last night, and stood in the atrium for what seemed like an eternity staring at three empty, though dirty, tables. When someone finally noticed that we were standing there, we were made to feel like we a bother rather than welcome customers to a new bar trying to build a reputation. We were finally seated next to an open door to the outside. Fresh air is wonderful, though not when it is 40 degrees outside! (They did close the door when we asked, though that should have been obvious...). The wine list offered an impressive list of wines by the caraffe, glass and taste, but there were no flight or paring suggestions, and the wine glasses were made of thick glass that both looked and felt cheap. The menu was impressive, and food we had was lovely, though when we ordered a cheese plate and pate, it was missing any crackers or crostini! We were given a small bread basket when we sat down, and when we asked for a bit more, we were, once again, made to feel like a bother! There were two waiters, one a woman, and one a man. The woman seemed to try to make things better, and seemed to enjoy discussing the wines, though the male waiter was rude, sarcastic and condescending! I really hope that the management reads this review, because I really want a great wine bar in Oakland, and I am so excited about the re-invigoration of the downtown area. This place could be great, but the customer service needs to be improved.
Pros: a wine bar in oakland! good food.
Cons: Poor service
