Editorial Review for Maritime East – by Sarah Inez Levy
In Short
The minds behind San Francisco's Cafe Maritime took their concept east (East Bay, that is) to give fishophiles across the bridge a taste of the freshest sustainable seafood. With both a raw bar and a simple menu of favorites like fish chowder, there's something to satisfy fish-eating rookies and experts alike, and a wood-burning oven adds pizza to the short list of choices for seafood-shunners. Cool blue hues and abstract ocean-themed decor complete the underwater garden feel.

I was dissapointed with Maritime East. I wanted to find a great happy hour place with oysters & I was initially happy to find Maritime on citysearch. Maritime's website indicated $1 oysters after 10 PM which obviously wasn't happy hour, but I was willing to compromise...so I went ahead & made a reservation for myself +1. Upon dining there & getting the check, Aronette, our server, charged me $12 for the 1st dozen oysters & then $36 for the 2nd dozen! SURPRISE! Thank goodness I noticed it before I paid! Fortunately, she revised the check upon confronting her, but it was very embarassing in front of my girlfriend & seemed like a bit of a scam! We're NOT going back to Maritime. :(
Pros: They tried to give personalized service...but there was barey anyone there on a Friday night!
Cons: Sneakily tried to overcharge by 3x on the check! Horrible value!

My husband and I had a wonderful time last night at this restaurant. We booked our reservation online using opentable. I noted in the reservation that we were there to celebrate a work promotion. When we arrived to Maritime East, we were greated by name and congratulated on our work promotions. We were seated immediately. The ambiance of the restaurant is really unique. There was a bubble room with a really cool circle sculpture and a sand room with individual columns of sand lining the walls. It was very clean and fresh feeling. We started with some great drinks for their coctail list. I had the stormy sunset and my husband had the bourbon streetcar. They were both very tasty and inventive drinks. As for the food - we started with a selections from their ray oyster bar. The oysters were amazing and fresh and the dipping sauce was wonderful. Next we split the dungenous crab appetizer. It was very light and refreshing. For dinner, I had the deviled dungenous crab pasta and my husband had the petra sole. Halfway through our meal - we traded plates. While both dishes were great, I definitely would reccomend the crab pasta dish. For dessert, we split the Tuscan Olive Oil cake. The cake was good for an olive oil cake - but the best part of the dessert was the creme fresh icecream and fresh strawberry sauce that it came with. My only issue with the restaurant is the relatively limited menu. But I will definitely be coming back for the great food and amazing service.
Pros: Ambience, Seafood, Happy Hour, Raw oysters, coctails
Cons: limited menu
