Strip Mall Quality Japanese Food. This was one of those restaurants for those not willing to travel far to get Japanese. The portions were small for the price. Not as tasty as other restaurants nearby. Atmosphere was nice-and service was above par, but go into the main part of Alameda for Japanese-it's worth the travel.
Moderately sized sushi house offers authentic Japanese fare..
In Short
Expect no less than freshness, quality and authenticity at this restaurant whose interior--rich with dark woods and accented lighting--teems with enthusiastic diners. The menu includes combination dinners (teriyaki, tonkatsu breaded cutlets), sashimi combinations (omakase), seasonal sushi, as well as a carefully crafted sake list. Flavorful appetizers include grilled blackened cod and miso soup with silkened noodles.
Not what I expected.
I heard great things about this place, so I finally gave it a shot-as I usually go to Kai's in Alameda which is closed for remodeling. I was not impressed, though the food was good, it was not great. The sushi rolls were very small & the prices are not so good. Seating was plentiful, however we were seated practically on top of the two other couples in the restaurant....I really miss Kai's-will have to visit the Oakland location.
On the plus side, the decor was lovely & the avocado was really fresh.
Editorial Review. Angel Fish offers traditional Japanese Cuisine including an array of appetizers, entrees, and sushi complimented by an extensive sake list.
The single best place for Sushi in the East Bay.
Nothing compares to Angelfish this side of the bay. Taka, the owner and head sushi chef, has created a restaurant rich with all the things that make a restaurant memorable and worth repeated return visits: fresh, delicious, expertly prepared sushi and authentic Japanese dishes, a warm and welcoming staff, ambience that is both elegant and casual.
The bottom line is the food is amazing, the service is fantastic, and there isn't a single Japanese restaurant in Alameda that even comes close.
My favorite sushi restaurant in the East Bay. I don't understand why people would wait over an hour to eat at another sushi place (that shall remain nameless but is located in South Shore). I would spend my time waiting to eat at Angel Fish instead! I believe Angel Fish first opened in the late 90's - almost 10 years ago and their sushi has been delicious consistently. I've heard friends who have taken friends/colleagues who are from Japan praise the sushi/sashimi at Angel Fish...you really can't get better compliments that that. Their non-sushi menu items isn't as extensive as some other Japanese restaurants. But, if you looking for a satisfying sushi meal, this would be my first choice.
A bit overpriced for average food. Just your average Japanese restaurant, a bit pricey for its worth, but the only thing amazing was the mackerel! The best mackerel I've had anywhere, prepared in any way! The service was not so nice.
Fresh. The fish is consistently fresh here, and specials are creative and flavorful. Try the spicy tuna salsa, a house creation in which spicy tuna is served on wonton wrappers. The salad is also uniquely tasteful. Prices are all right, but increase quickly when with a group. There can be a wait on weekend nights.
Outstanding Sushi.
Better than Ebisu, as good as Kirala (and cheaper than Kirala, and less line than either place) this restaurant is a real find, and well worth the drive (oh, it's easy to park, too). They have a decent sake collection, inventive sushi offerings, and outstanding dishes from the kitchen.
I look forward to going each time, because there's always something new and different on the specials board. Give it a try.
