Best Salvadorean Reastaurant.
It is nice to visit a nice, clean, elegant and friendly place like Platano where the food is excellent, specially the pupusas, I highly recomend this place where Irma makes of this place a unique Salvadorean Restaurant.
Niche restaurant adds to the eclectic Berkeley dining scene with a menu of dishes straight from El Salvador..
Owner Irma Chavez Mischler aims to make Salvadoran cuisine more mainstream in this sister location to her mother's Kaliente restaurant in El Sobrante. Provided it's not crowde, servers let patrons choose their own table, and diners may start their Latin American meal with plantains, yucca, tamales, or a variety of pupusas (a dish somewhat similar to a quesadilla). In terms of heartier fare, dinner entrees come with tortillas, rice and beans. Drinks-wise, wine and beer are available, as is organic coffee.
Hits: Pupusas--handmade corn tortillas stuffed with vegetables, cheese, beans or pork--are a staple. Choose one of nine offerings as an appetizer, or mix and match to make up an entire meal.
Misses: While the restaurant appeals to all customers, those who've tasted authentic Salvadorian cuisine before might find most plates--and even the hot sauce--a bit bland.
Best El Salvadorean in the Bay. I moved to the bay area a couple months ago and was looking for a quiet, welcoming restaurant with great food and service. Platano meets all of these criteria. The food is wonderful! The restaurant has El Salvadorean artwork hanging on the walls and is spacious and clean. It is very refreshing to find such authentic El Salvadorean food in such a great location. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to try someplace new. I get the sopa de res every time. It is a beef soup with a variety of vegetables in a mint flavoered broth. It is enough to serve two people, although we also usually order the pupusas and the plantains for dessert.
Decent food, bad service.. We waited for over 45 minutes to receive our food. The food was about average. The place has a nice atmosphere, however, we experienced the worst service ever. Even though they kept our glasses full, we waited over 10 minutes for the check, asked a waiter several times, the waiter seemed to ignore our request and continue what he was doing. We got up stood in front of the counter and was ignored by the wait staff. We eventually just left what we thought would cover the bill on the table. We will never go there again and will advise our friends to do the same.
Best Pupusas I have ever had. My family and I were walking through University looking to try out some new restaurants, we decided to give Platano a try. We heard about it a lot and it seemed like the best newbie restaurant in town. I went to Platano to try it out and I was very pleased with the service, we had the nicest waitress in the world. I ordered the Bistec with casamiento and a salad, which was really good. We had plenty of different things; such as: yucca, pasteliyos, platanos and etc. The outcome was DELICIOUS and not too pricy. I have tried pupusas before, but the place I'd been to were a hole in the wall. I highly recommend this restaurant, ESPECIALLY if you are tired of the same old hamburgers and hot dogs.
Cheap eats! Great food!. So I tried this restaurant tonight and I was thrilled with the experience overall so I figure I would let others know. First of all this is a newly opened family owned restaurant in downtown Berkeley. When you first walk in it may have a slight scent of pine sol but the food makes up for the excessively sanitized scent. There is plenty of space so this would be great for groups, families, working lunches or a casual tasty feast. You must try the Pupusas and also the Scapilon which is the beef with lime and mint......yum. See if you can get a few dishes and share as you will want to try all the different flavors. The food was fresh and delicious, the restaurant was not crowded, which is logical considering they are new. I think if they get more business they will even become a better restaurant and have friendlier wait staff. Overall if you want to try Cuban food, I would definitely give this place a shot, for the price you are getting a great deal of food. Just an FYI not a romantic date place. However, I think this restaurant with a bit of tweeks in the atmosphere has a bright future!
