Editorial Review for Sushi Hana – by Lorraine Sanders
In Short
Red walls and colorful art imbue this laid-back bar and restaurant with instant energy, while a lengthy menu promises ample options for both carnivores and vegetarians. Playfully named creations like Beauty in Bed, Fire in the Hole and Via Mexico will keep jaded sushi-goers guessing. For the purists, plenty of classic offerings and nigiri selections are also available. The bar stocks sakes from the economical Ozeki to the splurge-worthy Kubota Sen-shin Dai Ginjyo.

That's your first clue. I've been passing by this restaurant for 5 months and decided to give it a try since I miss my favorite Sushi Bar when I moved here from Redondo Beach, CA. The Miso Soup was a very good contender and raised my hopes. The service was good, but then the place wasn't busy at all. Everyone was friendly. I got my hot sake right away, that's good as it was real cold outside and I was frozen. I ordered my long standing favorite, the soft shell crab. That's when the party ended. If I didn't know what it was I wouldn't have known what it was. I have always recieved my soft shell crab INTACT. Not cut in battonets. WTF?! My only guess was that some crabs were not edible so the chef wacked it off and cut it up? I have no clue but the taste was not what I like. Big thumbs down here. I love the buttery melt-in-your-mouth that Good Ono (fatty tuna) provides but when I ordered the "special" I had a real hard time separating it between my mouth and chopsticks. It was tough and chewy. I shared this bad news with the management and they proceeded to try to make it up by chopping up more of this semi-leather and served it in a handroll. Points for the effort but that's not what I wanted. The manager agreed with me about the chewyness and I countered that he shouldn't put it up as a "special" since it wasn't. Truth. The Unagi was good, just as I have enjoyed before. Not out of this world, but good. I ended with the appetizer size Tempura shrimp and veggies. Good. I spent well more than I thought I would which left me disappointed. With all the good Sushi places around the area I won't be returning to this one which is 2 blocks from where I live. Good Luck Hana Bar.
Pros: 2 blocks from home. Large private party area upstairs
Cons: Tough fatty tuna, lousy soft shell crab, not enough creativity, very static offerings

THIS PLACE IS A 2 1/2 BLOCKS FROM MY JOB. i NEVER WENT IN UNTIL I HAPPENED TO BE IN THE CITY ON A SUNDAY NIGHT WITH A COMPANION AND I HAD A SUSHI CRAVING. MY COMPANION ORDERED THE PRAWN TEMPURA AND WAS VERY HAPPY BECAUSE THE PRAWNS WERE BIG AND JUICY AND DELICIOUS AND TOOK CARE OF HIS MAN SIZE APPETITE. I ORDERED THE SPIDER ROLL (DEEP FRIED SOFT SHELL CRAB WITH VEGETABLES)AND EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT A SAKE DRINKER WE ORDERED SOME SPECIAL SAKE THAT WAS VERY GOOD.THE SPIDER ROLL WAS DELICIOUS . WE LEFT THE PLACE FEELING SATISFIED AND SINCE THAT NIGHT I HAVE WENT IN FOR SUSHI AT LUNCH TIME 3 OR 4 TIMES A WEEK.
Pros: THEY MAKE TSOME OF THE TASTIEST ROLLS
Cons: I ALWAYS HAVE TO ASK FOR EXTRA WASABI. I LIKE TO FROST MY ROLLS LIKE CUPCAKES WITH THE WASABI
