Editorial Review for John Colins – by Marcia Gagliardi
The Scene
This urban bungalow features a blend of industrial touches, like exposed brick walls and vaulted ceilings, warmed up with sexy dim lighting, a leather-padded bar with matching stools and large kitschy paintings of dogs. Tall tropical plants serve as organic dividers between groupings of leather ottomans. The projected vintage or surfer flicks above the door are a nice ambient touch. The owners have been in the industry for a while, so the crowd includes fellow club managers and bartenders mingling with hipsters and SoMa workers.
The Draw
The bar staff is fanatical about cocktails, so it's a pleasure to work one's way through the menu of concoctions, in addition to letting them make special recommendations of liquors from the "floating" bar shelves. The Cherrybomb, a martini made with Effen Black Cherry Vanilla vodka, sugar and grenadine, is especially seductive. Although the environment is sleek, it's refreshingly unpretentious.

Insider Tips
Save MoneyHappy hour specials run Mon-Fri from 5pm to 8pm. All beers are $2 (except Guinness and Boddington's, $3), all well drinks are $3, and everything else is $1 off. There's also a daily custom concoction for $4.
ParkingPark on the street or head to the pay lot just down Natoma for $5 after 4pm. (There is rarely an attendant after 10pm, so you might be able to park for free.)
When to GoHappy hour really packs in a fun crowd, but later in the evening it's more hipster and less 9-to-5'er.

We were asked to wait outside, we were told that there was an over capacity issue, which we understood. While waiting for a long time other people were let inside just fine. I've live in San Francisco for many years and I have not seen this discriminatory behavir in a long time except this one.

John and Collin are fun, outgoing bartenders who know how to run a business. I see all kinds of people in here for happy hour every week, and I keep coming back. They keep it real and change it up. Last thursday they were doing some kind of promotion for a new sake drink infused with fruit flavors, Sake2me. It was new and refreshing, and I actually went on line to see where I could buy it for my next get-together at home. I fully recommend checking this place out and maybe even finding a new cocktail or sake drink while you're at it.
Pros: fun, smart owner-bartenders always there to make it right
Cons: sometimes can get crowded
