We were very excited to try this place because of rave reviews but it was a huge disappointment. Our white wine was luke warm. We got an appetizer sampler. For $25 a plate, you would expect more than wilted greens, so-so pickled fish, two bites of fried potato and a sausage with only one flavor, cayenne pepper! Rabbit pate was tastless. It might as well have been edible rubber. Spaghetti was extremely dry and flavorless. The noodles were so sticky that they created a big clump on the plate. The only good thing about this place is excellent service.
Perhaps people think this place is good because there is always a crowd waiting to get in. I think it's one of the worst Italian food I have ever had, certainly one of the worst restaurants on Piedmont Ave. You can get much better Italian food for less $ across the street.
Overpriced. Cat food-esque.. I was really disappointed by Dopo, whose name I now say in a stuffy accent. My date and I were looking for an upscale romantic spot, and the menu looked good so we waited patiently for a table, getting hungrier and more excited by the minute. When we finally sat down, we got a hunk of stale bread to hold us over, with cold butter that we had to warm between our hands like peasants. When my tiny square of lasagna came, it was rife with taste sensations but also LUKEWARM and with a consistency akin to canned Friskies. My date's pizza was okay, but also too small to satisfy. When we left, we were out $50 and still so hungry that we actually considered going down the street to Barney's for a "dessert burger".
Best Pizza and Lasagna. Dopo is, in a word, delicious. Everything we've had, from the pizza to the lasagna to the dessert has been exceptional. Nice wine choices, too. It's fun to sit at the counter and chat with the cooks, watch the dinner in progress. It's a small, intimate place (too small for the crowds that show up which, unfortunately, means lines on busy nights). But, since moving here from L.A., it's become one of our favorite East Bay hangs. Wonderful staff, too.
Wonderful Little Gem!. I love that this place has only 8 or 10 tables + some bar seating. So comfortable and intimate. The Crostone of Pork was excellent and not your usual crostini appetizer. The pizzas are always just the way I like them, thin - crisp and lightly adorned with fresh and tasty toppings. Their pancetta is always a little more fat than meat and the lasagna dish is not the most memorable pasta on the menu but overall, these people know how to offer a great dining experience. I look forward to many more visits!
Romantic. How does Citysearch rate this place a "no" for romantic? My boyfriend and I sat at the bar last night (thursday night-"school night") and enjoyed our time immensely. The cannelini bean puree with squid was a small, yet savory treat before our meals. The prosciotto pizza was palette pleasing, the sausage with greens was a bit too salty though. The buttermilk panna cotta was delightful. The staff get a long nicely and are very courteous. The ambiance is the best thing about Dopo. The converted victorian into a modern day, charming little restaurant...very special. Oh! the wines are reasonably priced, that is great. We will be back.
harsh, but necessary. i'll take the wait and likewise the small menu, if the food and/or service can make up for it. the service is a bonus if the food is good. the servers were attentive and genuinely polite. however, the food is not extraoridnary. the bufalo mozarella and oregano pizza had little to no flavor, the crust was flavorful but not cooked enough. the texture of the sauce and cheese were very good, oregano was dried and barely visible. it lacked rememberance. the lasagna was three layers, very small portion for the price and again, would reconsider had it been tasty. both dishes had too much pepper which led us to believe maybe they're realizing the food needs some spice. the small space is quaint but the menu prices are inflated for what is served and what it tastes like.
ebgirl. This restaurant serves the best crab tortellini EVER!! Food and service are great, but it's a small space. However, we arrived at 7 p.m. midweek and were seated promptly.
An ingredient-focused Italian menu is the latest reason to venture into Oakland's gourmet ghetto..
Sleek and sophisticated with maize-colored walls, warm lighting and abstract prints dangling from metal fixtures, this tiny cafe is a fitting addition to Piedmont Avenue's restaurant row. Well-heeled ladies and crunchy East Bay types are coddled by extremely professional servers.
A former cook at Oliveto, Jon Smulewitz assembles food from an Italian menu as tiny as the space itself. Antipasti misti (a trio of small bites) changes daily, but prototypical examples include meaty, roasted porcini with pea greens; pristine shrimp with chickpeas; and a mini-fritter of big-eye tuna with barsan olives. Pastas are a revelation. White-on-white spaghetti with cauliflower and ricotta proves monochrome works, and Dungeness crab tortellini napped with butter and snipped chives sings. Crackly, chewy pizzas are a wondrous exercise in restraint, especially the spicy peppers and sausage option, coated with vibrant tomato sauce. Desserts, like chocolate almond torte and lemon tart topped with creamy sabayon, are simple and delicious.
wonderful FOOD!. Getting the antipasti is a must! You get a sampling of the appetizers and they are all wonderful. Both of our entrees - handmade porcini tortelloni and proscuitto pizza - were delectable. The wines are all Italian table wines and priced as such - nothing over $26 per bottle. The dessert left something to be desired, but the cappucinos we finished with made up for it. Overall, a great meal and the small place is perfect for a two-some.
Tasty and cozy.
The pizza is simple yet very tasty with a chewy/crispy crust.
The pasta dish I tried (with clams) was decent, but didn't come off as anything special.
The rich chocolate cake for dessert was excellent,
a must for chocoalte lovers.
To avoid a long wait, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
