In Short
Iraqi and Eastern European specialties at this small, bejeweled Berkeley favorite feature vegetables and herbs plucked from the restaurant's own half-acre garden, blended with exotic spices like sumac, cardamom and coriander. The results are impeccably fresh, fragrant, Mediterranean-style platters, grilled lamb, chicken and vegetable dishes. Meats are free range, breads fresh baked, and all dairy and oils are organic.

To call Zatar a hole-in-the-wall would be a gross exaggeration. This place is tiny. I mean impossibly tiny. I went there last week and put my name in with the hostess and she said it would be 30 minutes. First off, no one tries to greet you. You must flag them down. Second, the place is so small that when you try to enter through the door, you're basically elbowing across diners tables. Forget about waiting inside. Even with the indignity of waiting outside, we figured 30 minutes wasn't bad. So we waited. 30 minutes passed, no sign of getting a table. At 45 minutes we asked the hostess if she thought we would get a table soon. She said, it should just be a minute. At an hour, we were starting to get pissed. We asked again. She said I don't know if you'll get a table. This is absolutely unacceptable. I can forgive some problems with estimation, but to be more than double the time, with no sign of approaching seating and no attempt at conciliation, I have to say avoid Zatar. The food is not worth the wait. I have read elsewhere that some people are in fact told to wait then turned away hours later. Zatar was featured on KQED recently so it's even more packed (and draws a KQED type of crowd - you know what I mean) Don't waste your money on a business that clearly doesn't need it.

This quaint, cosy restaurant is one of our favorites and we can't wait to go back again. How can y.ou go wrong with all-organic ingredients, simple yet sensational recipes, professional/personable service, and beautiful ambience. We will be there as soon as they re-open.

A meal for 2 with a bottle of wine is over a hundred dollars at this neighborhood restaurant that, while cute and cosy, serves up thoroughly midbrow food for bay area palates at big city prices. There was nothing wrong with anything we tried, but nothing wrong just isn't enough at $20+/entree. Shaky service.
