The quintessential frozen Italian treat comes in a rainbow of flavors at this Castro gelateria..
In Short
Artfully garnished and thickly whipped, the velvety gelato here is made in small batches using all-natural ingredients and traditional techniques the owners picked up from Italian masters of the craft. The cool and creamy offerings span a world of different tastes, from classic chocolate and vanilla to the unexpected mojito. Vegan-friendly sorbetto, the all-fruit version of this frozen delicacy, is available in many varieties, from simple banana to exotic pomegranate.
VEGAN GELATO!!!!!. RAD! Vegan gelato!!! and not just one designated vegan flavor in a creamy sea of real gelato, but 10-15 diferent vegan flavors to choose from!!! IMAGINE! kind of a raver-y atmosphere, but still doable - and COME ON, VEGAN GELATO! plus, its lower calorie and has low cholesterol to those health conscious non vegans! IT RULES!
Good Gelato!. Mundo Gelato or gelateria naia, is a great with great tasting ice cream. The first time i went i fell inlove with the decor and the flavors. Ferrero Rocher tasted exactly like the chocolate, rasberry tasted like rasberry, and the the rose flavor was surprisingly tasty. All the chocalate flavors are delicious. Go now!
OH my GOd. The gelato here is the best outside Italy!! The flavors are delicious, it reminds me of the willy wonka quote "and the snozberries taste like snozberries." The texture and density are excellent and the variety of flavors makes it a treat to visit everytime. I recommend rose, kiwi, strawberry, chocolate orange. They are totally laid back and left you try all the flavors. Treat your self to a smile and go to Gelataria Naia.
where's your tastebuds?. I disagree with all these reviewers, and if you've ever passed by this place, the line attests to its deliciousness. Having been to Italy and sampled the gelato there, I find Mondo Gelato (now Gelateria Naia) a fine example of authentic gelato, and another friend currently living in Italy agrees. The fruit flavors are delicious and light and change according to season. Try bosc pear, mango and coconut (my favorite), pineapple, frutti di bosco (a mix of berries in a yogurt), kiwi, or limoncello. Moreover, the gelateria is a godsend for lactose-intolerant/vegans. There is an entire case to choose from with classics like vanilla and chocolate or the more exotic bran. You can taste all the flavors before buying. And the prices are reasonable: two scoops for $3. Try for yourself.
Notsoohot.. No offense to Mondo Gelato, but seriously folks. Come on. The prices are ridiculous for the sample-sized serving that they give you for $5. The flavors ARE NOT GOOD. I don't care if they change daily. They're not impressive. The only thing that's really nice about the store is the decor, but even that seems a little presumptuous. Don't go- there's a better place just a ways down Shattuck on Walnut called Angel Falls.
Nice place to have ice cream. Mondo Gelato is not the best place I have ever had ice cream. It will not blow your mind. But it is pleasant, and well decorated, and they have flavors to interest and please. It's a great place to go to extend a long lunch.
Mondo Delicious. Great flavors, friendly staff, authenic gelato and oh did I mention over fifty flavors that change daily....
Mondo Gelato no big thing.. Lots of choices and it all LOOKS appealing, but Mondo Gelato's gelato lacks the density and texture of good Italian gelato. Some of the flavors are terrible. Cinnammon for example instead of being a light vanilla and cinnammon concoction is flavoured like someone hired 5000 students to chew Big Red gum and spit the juice into the mixture. Nasty! Chocolate (hard to screw that up)seems to be the only edible flavor aside from a few of the fruit flavors. Yuck! Hate to say it but you're better off walking 2 blocks to Ben & Jerry's on Oxford.
