Best Chinese food for non-Asian born diners.
I live in San Francisco but have been very disappointed in the Chinese food, despite the thousands of Chinese restaurants in town. I find them either inconsistent or the cuisine is geared towards Chinese eaters, using ingredients not found elsewhere. For example, I happen to like white meat chicken. There are many Chinese restaurants that don't even have it in the kitchen! I also like my BBQ pork lean, not full of grizzle. This is not always possible to find in SF as fat and grizzle in food is OK for the usual Chinese diner. I have to say, in one sense, I am jealous of my Chinese friends as they will eat and enjoy almost anything, but I have a typical non-asian palette.
My Dad lives in Walnut creek and goes to Yan's all the time. When you order any dish on the menu, you know it will have fresh and high quality ingredients. It will also taste the same every time you come back. My son is very picky about his soup and loves their wonton's. The pot stickers are delicious, the stuffing is always flavorful and I've never bit into a chunk of fat or grizzle. I also recommend the chicken in lettuce leaves, the pork chops and believe or not but excellent egg fu young. Something hard to find this side of the Rockies! Their shrimp dishes are very generous and the shrimp is always cooked just right. I like to try different things every time I go and have never been disappointed.
Overall, it is consistently excellent and a good place to try new dishes. If it wasn't a bit of a trip, through traffic, from SF, I would eat there every week. I hope they eventually open up a restaurant closer to home.

Miss this restaurant and you have not missed anything!.
I was at Yan's Lafayette for lunch after a long break ... by the end of the meal I found myself wishing I had driven to Walnut Creek instead to Yan's China Bistro where the food is amazing .
I ordered the Hot Braised Prawns with chow mein.. The prawns were served in a sugary sauce, were not at all 'spicy' and were served with underdone, completely tasteless carrots - sliced large! The chowmein looked as if it were food for the dogs ... cold and extremely unappetizing both in taste and to look at. If I was not hungry I would have left without eating a morsel. The cost? The same as any other place. The service? Passable.
