What Our Expert Scouts Say

Gregoire

Oh potato puffs. I wish they were sold in stores everywhere. Pedestrians stopped and asked what we were eating because we looked so happy. $4.25 for nine -- but the creamy, piping hot consistency of each bite was so worth it.

Amazing french take-out!. Amazingly good food for a ridiculously low price, friendly staff, love-love-love this place! Potato puffs is one of my favourites.

Great takeout!. I've been to both the Berkeley and Piedmont locations and the food is consistently fantastic. This is a great place for foodies who feel like taking some good food home or just want to sit in a casual place to eat (if you can get a seat). The portions are very good and I've never had a bad dish here. Lunch is clearly the best value/most bang for your buck, but dinners are great too. The food is comparable to a very good restaurant, but you can have your own wine and save on the 15% service tip.

don't kid yourself. My top candidate for most overpriced & worst value for your dollar. The food is nothing to write home about, and many people are simply romanced by the presence, personability, and accent of the owner. Each visit I made, I left feeling gouged despite the fact that their potato puffs are good. But not good enough for a gastronomic wet dream. So what, it's a high-falutin picnic! Next...

treat yourself!. last year during Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and i got takeout from Gregoire's. we didn't have to worry about reservations or crowds. the food is as good as any gourmet restaurant (try the potato gratin). portions are good, especially since it's hearty food. the main entrees all come with veges on the side. the nice thing is that Gregoire is there and talks to customers so you actually get to see who's cooking your food, a true rarity these days. the monthly menu's online so you can call ahead to avoid a wait. go home, pop the cork on a bottle of wine, and enjoy a nice meal.

Gregoire is a gem!. I've been there twice & will definitely go back for more. I went on a calm weekday and had the pleasure of talking to Gregoire and his staff. The man is as wonderful as his cooking! I simply must go back and find out where he gets his bacon. I had pork tenderloins seared with bacon and it was juicy, tender, and flavored with just the right amount of seasoning.

J'adore Gregoire. Oh! Berkeley's best kept little secret. Sooooo good it should be illegal!!!! The menu changes monthly but they always have potato puffs. You must, I mean must, get the potato puffs. When you eat your first ever potato puff, you know that you then can die in peace. Plus, Gregoire is one of the most delightful men I have ever met. He has this super thick French accent that only makes him ever more charming! Dinner is expensive but lunch is affordable.

Affordable Decadence. this tiny place is my favorite restaurant in the East Bay since I started dining there in October 2002. warm and intimate, you can sit on the stools inside and watch the cooking action, or on picnic benches outside and be served right through the windows of the kitchen. or take your goodies home. wherever you eat, the food is delicious and sophisticated, yet simple. always surprising, amazing combinations (a favorite was the truffled potato gratin - or as my sister called it, "trufflatoes".) we've mostly visited at lunchtime, when you get scrumptious gourmet meals at incredible prices. (and you get $.50 off if you save your container and present it at your next meal!) portions are definitely big enough to share. gregoire himself is very warm and friendly and makes you feel like you're sitting in his kitchen at home. there's something for everyone's taste.

Gourmet TakeOut. When you want to treat yourself to a 4 star meal but can't face going out, here's the solution.

Charming Take-Out. The delicious aroma of Gregoire permeated out of its open window next to the grill and as I passed by this charming and small take-out restaurant...I had to try it. I ordered the lambchops with asparagus while my boyfriend had some sort of beef rib dish...can't really remember...followed by warm crispy apple desserts..I was very pleased with my meal. The meat was so tender and juicy and the veggies with the buttery sauce complimented the meal...Very different from usual places that add a lot of extra salt and seasoning, thereby masking the real flavor of the meat..in my case, the lamb. Portions were just right for me....not too big to make me feel sick afterwards...All in all, definitely a place you should try! =)

Finally satisfying food-to-go!. While not so concerned with nasty Telegraph-oversizing or low-cal, unsatisfying imitations, Gregoire's food stabs at the American heart with a Normandine dagger full of flavor and satisfaction. It may not be as largely portioned as other lunch-time haunts, but the smaller sizes persuade you for more fat and gusto (which won't kill you). The crispy smoked duck pocket, while more of an Asian fusion dish than pure Normandy cuisine, is intoxicating (in a good way!). What really grows addictive, however, are the potato puffs served every month: creamy, salty dollops of mashed potato, deep-fried into crispy nuggets with liquidy centers! Get them--you won't be let down. The price is well worth it, and after licking your lips at the meal's finish, you're convinced it's not at all as expensive as the Gourmet Ghetto may imply. As a take-out restaurant, Gregoire surpassed my expectations.
