Incredible food, but I wouldn't go there for the bar

by elji at Citysearch

I read a few enthusiastic reviews of Talk of the Town and had to check it out. Some people were wondering if it had changed owners, and it has. In fact, it has a different name now (sorry, I forgot it) but the Talk of the Town sign is still outside so you will see it.

The Mexican restaurant, which is next door to and connected to the bar, has incredible food. We had the chile relleno plate and a steak burrito. Everything was fresh, hot, and really flavorful. The corn tortillas were thick and incredibly fresh. The sauce on the rellenos was light and very flavorful, the rice was fluffy, the salad fresh. My boyfriend admired the consistency of the steak burrito and said it really seemed like it was prepared with care. The meat was well drained so that it made a nice solid burrito and not a sloppy one.

The bar was super loud and we didn't end up staying there long. The people at the bar were nice, and they do have several pool tables, but it just wasn't really my scene. They did have a live band starting around 8 p.m. or so I think, but I think they stick more to traditional Mexican bands under the current ownership.

Check out the food and I think you'll be glad you did. Business seemed a little slow for a Saturday night considering how good the food was, so I encourage you to give these guys a try!

  • Pros: Incredible Mexican food
  • Cons: Loud bar

A bit of the SF Mission in Oaktown..

by rubyroom at Citysearch

I saw Shevil Knievel perform there recently, noticed the hip and happenin' crowd, and become thoroughly convinced I was in San Francisco! Talk of the Town has an awesome Mexican restaurant inside and live local acts downstairs AND headliners upstairs. Recently refurbished, it has a great, warm feel.

The drinks are strong too, so watch out. I am definitely going back - Oakland has no other place this nice!

  • Pros: drinks-strong, music, Scene
  • Cons: location
