Editorial Review for Trellis Restaurant – by Jim Harrington
The Food
The restaurant offers a wonderful, upscale Italian menu. It's short but rich with flavorful choices. From the starter side, try the lamb and black olive raviolis served with spinach and porcini reduction. Also, the traditional grilled polenta and tomatoes with balsamic herb sauce is a keeper. The apple and goat cheese salad is decadent and fantastic--served with soy beans, walnuts and lemon-pepper vinaigrette. Susan's Downfall is the find on the pasta menu. The large, flat raviolis are filled with cheese and herbs and covered in a rich gorgonzola-toasted almond sauce. Beyond pasta, try the rissotto with pan-seared sea scallops, asparagus and mascarpone, or the braised beef with melted leeks and gorgonzola-potato puree.
The Scene
Very classic. It's a hip alternative to the hip spots in town. People that don't want the Left Bank scene will settle in nicely here.

Nice upscale atmosphere. Beautiful tables with brand new looking linens. Your choice to dine on the upstairs patio or to dine indoors downstairs. The food was excellent. Portion size is ample but not overwhelming. 3 of 4 employees that served our table were good. Unfortunately, our main waitress was argumentative. She just didn't seem to want to be there. She parroted back the order in a sequence that doesn't match the menu and then chastised us for not recognizing it. I ordered a soda three times because they forgot twice and finally had to prevail upon the bus boy. They didn't seem busy. I asked for a box for the leftovers and I was told I didn't need it yet. Apparently the customer is not always right. The website offered a generous 20% discount for paying with AM EX, (which they honored) but you won't get it unless you ask for it. Simply paying with AM EX won't get you there. It's worth another try on a different night.
Pros: Atmosphere, Food
Cons: Service

We just returned from Stanford's Admit Weekend where we dined at Trellis on each of the four nights of our stay. The first night we ate at Trellis because it was our favorite restaurant from our first visit to Stanford. We continued to dine each evening at Trellis as we could not imagine finding a better dining experience. Every course of every meal that we and our guests had at Trellis was excellent. The prices were more than reasonaable including the wine. The owner, Kurt, knew many of his customers and treated everyone as special. It was fun to watch Kurt expertly play the crowd and attend to his customers that he so obviously values. If you want exceptionally prepared food, served with pride at reasonable prices and to be treated like "royalty", then Trellis is the restaurant for you.
Pros: Service, Food, Value
Cons: None
