Editorial Review for R & G Lounge – by Miriam Wolf
The Scene
Popular with San Francisco's restaurant cognoscenti, Chinese families and everyone in between, this Chinatown destination is hopping every night of the week. The blond-wood bar promises elegance, which is delivered in an upstairs dining room that's beautifully decorated with silk-screened prints and sectioned into smaller banquet rooms. The boisterous downstairs room is good for families.
The Food
Fresh-from-the-tank fish and shellfish are the hallmarks of this classic Chinese menu--from the nearly greaseless, deep-fried, salt-and-pepper crab to the steamed whole fish. Even a basic pan-fried noodle dish is brimming with treasures like baby octopus and perfectly cooked squid. For red-meat eaters, R & G's barbecued pork is lean, smoky and addictive. Don't miss the tender stir-fried pea shoots when they're in season. The cult favorite--a whole chicken hollowed out, stuffed with sticky rice and deep-fried--is an expensive but impressive conversation piece and must be ordered 24 hours in advance.

Every dish I tried in this restaurant was absolutely wonderful. The crab and shrimp were very fresh and cooked to perfection (not overdone). One of the best pan fried chow meins (Hong Kong Style) I've had. I really enjoyed how each dish was served one by one, rather than all at once, so you could savor and talk about each dish. Service was great.

Fast service, dirty restrooms, food ok, price very good, no exotic food, mix of local and tourist customers.
Pros: Great price, and fresh food
Cons: dirty restrooms.
