Awesome Mexican Food. I love this place. Great chips, great salsa, great place. Being from California I have had my share of Mexican and this place comes close to the best.
Worst Mexican you can get.
Juan's Place. Probably the worst Mexican food I have encountered in Berkeley. The food is roughly like that found in chain restaurants such as Chevy's. The last time I ordered a burrito with no sour cream. What arrived at the table was a burrito covered in sour cream. The staff would not correct their mistake.
For good Mexican the Mission District is the way to go.
Great atmosphere, bad mexican food. i've been to juan's countless times over the past ~5 years or so, it's a really fun place, good (if weak) maragaritas, great flour tortilla chips. but the food other than the chips is just bad at best. i don't know how so many people can give this such a high rating. it makes me embarrassed to be from san diego to see all these people reference juan's as the "best mexican restaurant north of SD." i was going to write this review yesterday but went to juan's last night and thought i'd give it a 15th chance or so, to see if the food has improved, or if perhaps i ordered the wrong item the first 14 times. Juan's is a great establishment especially for large groups but please for the love of god do not go here for the food. And for the record the best Mexican food north of san diego is in Redwood City, a heavily hispanic area of the peninsula that has ~15 mexican restaurants in a 3 mile radius. just like san diego.
Editorial Review by Christy Buena. Authentic, affordable Mexican food is served in an energetic atmosphere that has been around for more than 10 years.
A fun find.
Good, cheap food and a friendly atmosphere make Juans a great place to go with friends. Too bad its a bit out of the way...I lived in Berkeley for four years before I even knew it existed.
But the food and atmosphere are worth the little trek...its not fancy-schmancy tex-mex, its good old fashioned burritos, fajitas, and enchiladas. Go with friends for a casual, fun evening.
NOT AUTHENTIC: cheddar cheese grease.
I felt compelled to write in because I went to this place because of the other people's ratings, but I'm pretty sure they're all Juan's friends.
The Service was NOT bad, but the food was very very bad. I, without exaggeration, got a stomach ache. There was a pile of plastic-like ?monterey jack and cheddar cheese. The horchata was extremely watered down (maybe they didn't mix it before pouring).
I'm sorry Juan. But la verdad es la verdad.
To be fair, I think it would be a cool place to hang out and have beers, because the interior is pretty cool. Ahhh, I needed to end on a positive note.
RAD. This is the best mexican food in all the northern california land! As a san diego native, i missed sit-down mexican places with great tasting, authentic food for the first year i was here - - THEN, i was magically introduced to Juan's Place: the answer to my mexican food prayers to the Virgin Gaudelupe Hidalgo! The wine margaritas rock (don't listen to these other peeps), but i got lost the first 4 times i drove there - i suggest mapquest, bringing a huge appetite and a loved one or group of amigos fantasticos! I think it's awesome! try the shrimp fajitas!
Best Mexi in Berkeley.
The biggest problem this place has is its out of the way location. You really have to be brought here by a friend to discover it becasue it is so off the beaten track. Once you find it though, you will be hooked.
Huge prtions and resonable prices, good ambiance and great for large groups.
The one drawback is that the Margaritas are made with Wine becasue they don't have a hard liquor license. They still taste good though, by the pitcher. Seriously, the best Mexican food in the East Bay.
Jaun's is the Best. Jaun's place is the best mexican food you will find in the bay area...probably the best mexican food in the world...its a great place to go with the family and kids or if you just want to have a party...the service is excellent and the food is authentic mexican style home cooking...also, be careful and make sure your really hungry because they give you a lot of food for so little money...check out the best place, Jaun's place...
Best Neighborhood Surprise. You just have to go to this place to appreciate it. It's somewhere out in the nebulous warehouse area of west Berkeley, so it feels like a well-kept secret, which is part of the fun for me. The waiters are great, the strawberry margaritas come by the pitcher -- bring your rowdy friends! The waiters seem to love that kind of crowd. Don't get a burrito here, they're too sloppy. And remember, this place is fatty, greasy down-home food in the BEST sense. This is not Chevy's! But I must admit, I am a gringa and I sometimes request their flour tortilla chips because they are so delicious.
