Editorial Review for Virginia Bakery – by Mia Sara Bruch

The Scene
This beloved bakery was founded in 1934, and is the source of fond memories for many Berkeley residents. It's almost a relief to find this unpretentious sweet shop, with its white bread and iced sheet cakes, in the midst of all the focaccia along the North Shattuck.

The Food

Virginia Bakery makes four kinds of bread and a variety of buns and other baked goods fresh every morning, and the offerings are delicious, wholesome and affordably priced. Along with fresh pastries and a wide selection of cookies--including those thingamajigs with the sprinkles that no one else makes anymore. You'll also find birthday cakes straight out of your childhood fantasies, complete with colorful renderings of the latest superheroes in icing and candy.

Favorite Bite

Perfectly sweet and tarty, the cherry cheesecake is a must-have for your next brunch. In a concession to the neighborhood, they even serve coffee. No chai lattes: Just good hot joe from a canister.

I've been coming to this establishment for over 40 years and found the baked items to be very consistent and good. Not exactly a low calorie establishment, but ooh soo good.

Pros: Good bakery

Cons: not good for dieters

My student co-op bought day-old bread from Virginia Bakery for a semester. They were very friendly and helpful and the bread was always delicious. Their cakes and pastries always looked really tasty too. I enjoy even walking by the bakery, because it emanates a wonderful smell...
