The Scene
This beloved bakery was founded in 1934, and is the source of fond memories for many Berkeley residents. It's almost a relief to find this unpretentious sweet shop, with its white bread and iced sheet cakes, in the midst of all the focaccia along the North Shattuck.

The Food

Virginia Bakery makes four kinds of bread and a variety of buns and other baked goods fresh every morning, and the offerings are delicious, wholesome and affordably priced. Along with fresh pastries and a wide selection of cookies--including those thingamajigs with the sprinkles that no one else makes anymore. You'll also find birthday cakes straight out of your childhood fantasies, complete with colorful renderings of the latest superheroes in icing and candy.

I absolutely love their strawberry cake. It's not too sweet and the cake layers are fluffy and light. Their cookies are quite tasty as well and very cutely decorated!

My husband's family has been coming to Virginia Bakery for generations. Consistently good cakes, cookies and the butter cream tart is to die for!! I have ordered several cakes and have never had an issue.

It's your standard bakery. For some weird reason it reminds me of bakery's in LA. Maybe it's the era of the cases inside? You can buy individual cupcakes. It's like it was someone's birthday in your third grade class all over again. While they aren't as good as the Cupcakery up the street they're A) cheaper and B) more authentic to that store-bought/box cupcake experience. Yes, I am counting this as a definite plus. Also, if you want any kind of themed sheet cake, this is the place to go. Grocery stores in Berkeley either have weak or non-existent bakery services and gourmet bakeries just won't do a football or Pokemon cake.

The Details on Virginia Bakery

Favorite Bite:

Perfectly sweet and tarty, the cherry cheesecake is a must-have for your next brunch. In a concession to the neighborhood, they even serve coffee. No chai lattes: Just good hot joe from a canister.
