Good food but not baby friendly. The food was good but not great. The noise level in the restaurant was medium noisy and my 5 month year old was a little fussy but not screaming by any means and one of the restaurant staff said people where complaining about the noise. We had reservations for 5:45 so it wasn't that late. To be on the safe side don't bring babies.

well worth the high rating. Authentic, delicious Indian food. Flavor unmatched by any other restaurant in the area. Menu changes monthly.

The Best!. I live in SF. And even though there are many Indian restaurants here, I still come to Berkeley for the best Indian restaurant, Ajanta.

Take it from an Indian... the worst in the area. Ajanata by far has the worst Indian food in bay area. I was very excited to dine here after reading the reviews on this site. I was soooo disappointed. The food was terrible, the place was too crowded. They put way too many tables in a small space. And to top it all, it was expensive. Service was horrible. They made my food too spicy even after I told them to make it milder. When I told the waiter that the food was too spicy, he told me that no it was okay. After I insisted that they give me a milder dish, the waiter took my dish back, watered it down and brought it back out. You can find better food and cheaper in other cities of SF bay area. STAY AWAY from this place.

BAD FOR VEGETARIANS. Please note had two terrible vegetarian meals here in the last two weeks. The badal jaam with only 2 slices of eggplant worth about $0.25 for $6 as a main entree was inadequate in size & overpriced. Next time had the New This Month vegetarian special, which was described with many ingredients. But when it came, the dish was exactly the same as the spinach & potato side dish served with rice but only with vegetables. It was like eating the same dish twice. Our waiter didn't think to alert me to this redundancy. Attentive wait staff that is not helpful overall. Would not go again.

Amazing Indian Cuisine. I have been to Ajanta quite a few time now with my wife. I have been meaning to write a review for this place since it is truly something special. As soon as you walk in the door the staff is ver attentive and helpful. Their menu is extensive and also changes every month wich makes it very interesting andexciting. Both me and my wife like our food spicy, Ajanta has 5 levels of spice (the 6th level is sort of a secret and involves habanero if your interested) and they always make it just right. Not much else I can say other than this place is truly a treasure and worth traveling to.

Chef Lachu Moorjani keeps diners coming back with an ever-changing menu of regional specialties.. In Short
Every month, this Berkeley gem unveils a fresh roster of Indian dishes, like prawn bhuna masala, shrimp sauteed in a rich, spicy sauce, or khargosh khatta, rabbit stewed in onions, garlic, yogurt, cream, cardamom and mango powder. Vegetarians won't be disappointed with picks like tandoori asparagus and pan-fried eggplant brushed with tomato sauce. The elegant dining room is decorated with artwork inspired by the Ajanta caves, which contain beautiful carvings depicting the life of Buddha.

I want to keep it a secret!. Ajanta is by far the best Indian food I have ever had. I always ask the owner what he recommends and I am always amazed at the food. The staff are simply lovely people. Call ahead for reservations. I would really rather keep them a secret, because they are so good they will soon be overrun with customers!
