So good!. This place is so good. The food is very flavorful and the breads are wonderful. Make sure you're hungry though because portions are plentiful. The wait can get long on the weekends though so go early.

Our Favorite For Years. We have tried most of the Indian restaurants in the Bay Area and Ajanta is our favorite, by far. We have been going there for years now because the food is always inventive and delicious, the ambience is inviting, the service fast and attentive -who could ask for anything more? The prices are also very fair. Some people overlook that the cost of the meal includes naan bread as well as rice and vegetables, chutneys/dips and pappadum, some or all of which other restaurants charge for separately. The changing menu every month keeps it interesting, the wine list is outstanding and the desserts are beyond compare. We continue to try other places because we love Indian food, but we always come back to Ajanta!

It really is distinctive. Ajanta is one of the better Indian restaurants in the Bay Area, despite its lack of authenticity. Rather than duplicate authentic Indian standards, Ajanta plays with them, tweaking the dishes into something unique. They even present the dishes in a swank, Parisian manner. But don't let that throw you off - the food is usually quite good, and always amazingly fresh and high quality. The Maloni Sabzi and the Dhaniwal Murg Korma are intensely flavorful, rich, tangy, and uniquely prepared. The Malabar Chicken Curry is closer to authentic India, and is actually the same soupy stuff usually served with dosas. The portions can be skimpy, and some of the appetizers are kind of a joke, but overall it's one of the better Indian restaurants you'll find in Berkeley. If you're looking for authenticity, go to Cafe Raj down the street, Vik's, or the amazing Udupi Palace on Univeristy and MLK.
