Beer and Food on Planet Berkeley.
Located almost across the street from the downtown BART Subway station in Berkeley. I actually know one of the managers and he describes their decor as, "a Cathedral for Beer." The description is accurate. Pressed tin on the ceiling and walls, big wooden tables and a nice coppertop bar. Ample seating on the ground floor and a large up-stairs area. It is all pretty rustic, with big slab tables and woodwork everywhere.
There is a beer garden out back with live jazz a couple times a week and heaters to keep it comfortable.
The beer is very good, close to ten house brews. Everything from a Hefe to a stout. My favorite is the porter, robust with hints of Coffee and Chocolate.
Beyond the house brews, they also have a rotation of guest brews that are pretty much a who's who of the micros in the Bay Area.
Berkeleyites and home brews make for a mellow sports-friendly scene at this downtown pub..
The Scene
If churches do it for you, Jupiter should be on your list. The walls of the two-story restaurant-bar-jazz club are covered with beautiful tin siding taken from an old Berkeley church, as are the hanging light fixtures and pews that line the space.
The Draw
Unusual decor aside, the kitchen serves the standard Berkeley brewpub fare. There are 34 brews on tap at a time, as well as gourmet sandwiches and pizzas. There's a marinated fresh mozzarella sandwich, a garlic-roasted chicken sandwich and an albacore tuna sandwich, all served on focaccia bread. Pizzas are topped with baked ham, artichoke hearts, zucchini, Danish fontina and capers, among much else. The club attracts a slightly more upscale crowd than many of its competitors, in part because of its free jazz shows Thursday through Saturday. It also has an outdoor patio where bands play in warm weather.
bad attitude. The food and drink are good, no complaints. The staff are slow, rude and have an attitude. The outdoor setting is great but this is not a place where it's easy to have a really good time.
Awesome Weekend Joint. My friends and I come to Jupiter most every weekend for the live music and micro brews. The Jupiter label turns out some delicious seasonal flavors, and plenty of the staples (30 +) can be found as well. BBQ flavored pizza is a must.
What Planet Are You From?.
That last "reviewer" obviously works for (or owns) the competition. I love the Jup! Great live jazz under the stars out in the huge beergarten. What other place in the East Bay (or West Bay) does that? (I check this site often to see what bands are playing there, see below.) Sure, it would be great to be able to get a Martini there (maybe a Jupitini?), but other than that Jupiter is outta this world!
For the record, the place has a stand-up bar that's gotta be 40 feet long.
Beer Drinkers' Heaven. Jupiter is simply my favorite place to go. The beers on tap are fabulous as are the wood oven baked pizzas. Don't expect an extensive menu when you go; it is just a great place to hang out, drink good beer, and eat good pizza.
