Lots of good music!. I have been to Ashkenaz a few times and it is a great place. I go to a lot of venues and this one is very fun. They have a lot of good bands and it is a nice environment.
Warm and friendly folks, perfect for dancing and music nerds.
Ashkenaz has the best dance floor of any music venue I've ever been too.
Literally- it's a beatiful wooden floor that many many hours of community organizing and fundraising went into before it could be installed. No wonder that they have dance classes here in addition to their live music.
Highly reccomended for very specific music nights. If you love austrian folk music- chances are there will be the world's finest traditional performers coming to town and they will be playing here. I don't suggest just showing up- check the schedule or you might get some very random (but passionate and skillfull) music. If you want to see some truely "berkeley in the 60s" moments I suggest Grateful dead nights.
International sounds and positive vibes at an all-age dance club with a conscience..
In Short
This place functions as a nonprofit club and community gathering place, showcasing folk music from all over the world. In characteristic Berkeley style, the crowd is extremely diverse, representing all ages and nationalities. Best of all, the attitude here is open-minded and progressive.
