Editorial Review for McNally's – by Tom Geck
The Scene
This is the oldest Irish pub in Oakland (established 1933). Dark-wood tones and a long bar give the place a classic feel. The centerpiece of the room is a huge stone fireplace. Decorations include European sports paraphernalia, a framed portrait of JFK and a sign counting the days until St. Paddy's day. Irish bartenders keep folks happy with fast, friendly service.
The Draw
This is not a sports bar, but patrons watch two TV monitors closely when games are on. During the school year, this place gets crowded on weekend nights with UC Berkeley students blowing off steam. Most other times, it's a simple neighborhood watering hole for Rockridge locals. A bumper pool table provides a unique diversion, while Elvis and the Beatles dominate the jukebox.

The saddest pint poured, ever. My friend and I were served a Guinness in a plastic drinking cup and my Murphys came in a can...for $5.50 each. Yesterday it was St Patrick's Day. The bartender slopped the cup down and spilled all over the bar. They "ran out of glasses." An insult to the Irish spirit. On St. Patrick's Day, we both agreed we would have had a better pour at the airport lounge, or possibly at a ballpark.

The bartenders treat everyone like they're locals, always attentive and ready to tell a joke. I've always enjoyed going there because the atmosphere is laid back and a favorite to locals, if you go, ask for a Mussollini, the tastiest drink they make.
Pros: Bumper Pool, The fireplace, St Patty's Day
