What People Are Saying About Citron

The Scene – Floral bouquets, soft yellow walls, velvet curtains and black-and-white photos create an understated elegance. Although a restaurant this expensive could feel stuffy, Citron is unpretentious and mellow. Professionals and an older crowd patronize the place for its civilized atmosphere and reasonable acoustics. Service is gracious, but occasionally inattentive. – – The Food – Chef Christopher Rossi's French-inspired menu features 11 new dishes every few weeks. The beautifully presented, moderately sized portions feature mild, well-matched flavors but often…

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
With such a small menu, Citron doesn't necessarily provide well for the meatless set. Call ahead to check on the vegetarian offerings.
Save Money:
Sunday through Friday, you can select the economical prix-fixe menu.
Parking:
After 6pm, Rockridge BART parking lot offers free parking. Another good bet is the residential area across the street.

great service, food subpar

by flkovacs at Citysearch

very courteous, friendly, and somewhat attentive staff, but the food was pedestrian at best.

lobster bisque was pitiful, my salmon overcooked/dry, the 'sauce' very watery, the baby potatoes nicely steamed, but neither integrated nor complemented the rest of the dish.

the food selection was strange, and limited.

was it the chef's night off?

not recommending - highly overrated,

but did find street parking within a block!

  • Pros: friendly, comfortable, including bathroom
  • Cons: distracting cordoned off side area, food lacked originality, flavor, was overcooked and dry

Loved It.

by wholetoneseries at Citysearch

I had a wonderful experience at Citron. A few friends and I dropped in 10 minutes before they closed for Sunday brunch, which isn't the best way to start off a nice meal. But, our server was very welcoming, reassuring, and totally adorable. I had the falafel with a trio of salads... it was divine. I didn't sample the others' plates as I do not partake of meat, but they were all very impressed. The prices seemed very cheap for the quality of food and service we received. I highly recommend it.

  • Pros: Great server, great meal, great price, great neighborhood.
  • Cons: Nothing.

Beautiful but disapointing

by alexisalexander at Citysearch

We went to Citron for a special occassion, in the spirit of looking for new places in the East Bay, rather than going to SF for birthdays, etc.

The ambiance was lovely, we had a great seating, and we were able to easily book a reservation on line. Service was attentive and very friendly.

Now for the bad part, the food! Maybe the chef was having a rough night, but my lobster bisque was extremely salty and had a hard, metallic taste, my duck sausage was greasy and my main course of roasted chicken featured what looked more like a cornish game hen than a chicken with about 3 bites of chicken and a dried up and chewy dressing.

My lovely companion had a wonderful cannolli, but her lamb was over cooked and the sauce with it was too sweet and over-reduced.

We both concluded that whoever was doing the cooking had a very "heavy hand"

Although we loved the atmosphere, and the drinks were quite good, we would not return.

best Sunday brunch

by tammy70 at Citysearch

We had Sunday brunch with a party of 3. The place lives up to its charm. We had Omelets: Three Egg Omelet with Fresh Fruit and Grilled Baguette with Wild Mushrooms, Caramelized Onion and Fresh Chevre,Poached Loch Duart Salmon Eggs Benedict, and Gnocchi di Patate. The food was very tasty, fresh ingrediants, perfect portions, delicious and flavorful. Definitely will come back to this Rockeridge charm and jewel!

food is excellent, though admittedly expensive

by noefoodie at Citysearch

I've been to Citron twice and loved the food both times. Most recently, I had a duck confit soup, gnocchi, and chocolate torte (prix fixe menu for $30). The soup and gnocchi were excellent. The ingredients are very fresh and the flavors pure but flavorful. However, the chocolate torte was too sweet and rich. The prix fixe is a great deal, but the a la carte entrees were $20-30, which seems expensive for Rockridge.

Service was OK, not great. The server was knowledgeable but it seemed that he wanted to upsell us on everything. Why offer a prix fixe if you don't want people to order it?

Despite the prices, this is the kind of place you will feel comfortable in both nice jeans and business casual-type clothes. Also, it is quiet enough for conversation.

  • Pros: food quality, location
  • Cons: expensive
