Awesome neighborhood pub – Love Cato's! We take our whole family for great pub food and great selection of micro brews. Since we go early (before kids bedtimes!), it's before the crowds. And, they're really family friendly -- have crayons and paper for the kids to color with, and great kid food.
It's a Real Pub - Warm & Fun – Cato's has the best beer selection. Although it's not the biggest beer selection, it is eclectic and there is always something on draft that I love - like Lagunitas Czech Pils, Anderson Valley Belk's ESB, Jamaica Red, Drake's 1500 Pale Ale and Racer 5 IPA. If they don't have your favorite beer, take the opportunity to try something new (they let you taste beers if you want.) The winelist has some good wines for the price and it has a suprisingly varied selection. The pizzas kick butt, and I think their caesar dressing is the best I've ever had. Oh, and I love the Buffalo wings too. Overall, Cato's is a cool pub for those that know about it where you can see free live music a couple times a week. It's a good place if you are single too - lots of hot girls for some reason...
I love Cato's – I've been going to Cato's for years. It's part of life and I love the place. So I don't know what some of the other reviewers are talking about. Our experience is so different! For example, someone complained, among other things, that the clientele was diverse. This is bad???? I love the food, especially the salads and the pizza. According to a banner outside Cato's has been voted best bar food several times in the East Bay Express. As for the service and the speed with which food arrives, the kitchen does get backed up and sometimes, yes, stressed when things get busy. But that's the kicker. The place is generally packed at night, and sometimes during the day. And it's always full of regulars like me. So they must be doing something right.
Horrible Service! – As the food takes FOREVER to be prepared, my party ordered lunch by phone, arrived to find the food packaged to go and we intended to stay. No problem, we can still eat there. . . apparently not. The staff were extremely rude: scowling, rolling their eyes, blatently talking negatively about us just a few feet away, rude comments as we ordered drinks. When we nicely expressed our disappointment at their reactions, it only got worse. Absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced! I like the food, and go semi-regularly, but Cato's has now lost me (and about 5 other customers) for good. I won't spend my money in a place where I am treated like that. Management needs to be aware that the staff should at least display minimal friendliness, appreciation, and/or courtesy towards the customers.
pizza and beer – College style bar with the simple beer and pizza formula but the pizza is just OK. Big drawback for me is there are no seats at the small bar which eliminates the chance if just hanging unless your with a group. Lots of workers from the nearby Kaiser med so if you like nurses...
Live jazz and quality pub grub are offered at this spirited Irish tavern. – The Scene
The bright lighting, historic boxing and baseball photos, and wood decor make for a laid-back watering hole. The crowd is diverse; college kids, couples, solo older men and off-duty professionals huddle around wooden tables. Unlike most standard bars, it's busiest after work and calm on the weekends. There's never a cover charge.
On various nights of the week, the sounds of live jazz, bluegrass or Latin groups meld with the chatter into a loud, rumbling hum. Liquor isn't available, but there are 23 beers on tap (mostly American microbrews), hard cider and a decent wine selection--all possibilities that could go well with the house-made vegetarian chili, pizza and burgers.
$.02 – I went there for the first time today. You grab a table, order at the counter in the back, wait for your food to be brought to you, and get drinks at the bar. Simple, easy and low stress. It is noisy at Cato's even when 1/3 full. Loud music is always cranking. A couple televisions also provide some entertainment. As far as the crowd - I was there late afternoon and saw mostly a middle-aged, white clientelle although there is no age requirement. Food pricing is average, quantities are a little on the small side. Large selection of beer on tap at fair prices. Food counter service was lacking. Bar service was not. I'm interested in seeing what the crowd is like at night. During the day i found it enjoyable and will definately be back. My review may seem low but for me a 5 is average.
Beet salad + El Toro = : ) – Cato's has great beer. Try El Toro if they have it. El Toro means the bull in Espanol. Don't order any food unless you want a salad and you like beets. Then order a beet salad. It is a yummy beet salad that goes well with yummy El Toro beer.
Eh.... – Beer is only so-so; food is standard pub grub. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.
