What People Are Saying About Nellie's Soulfood

In Short – Buried in a low-profile office building under the freeway in West Oakland, this cavernous restaurant still manages to pack its plastic-covered tables to the gills with finger-licking professionals and neighborhood families. The menu is crammed with soul food standbys, like pan-fried chicken, smothered steak and a wide array of side orders, including yams, collard greens and black-eyed peas. A jukebox pumps gospel tunes through the dining room and adjoining bar, adding to the community atmosphere.
Very, Very Disappointed

The place has really changed for the worse. The pork chops we had were waaay too salty, but my dogs really seemed to enjoy them. When I first found this place years ago on 58th and Shattuck in Berkeley, it was fantastic.
- Pros: cornbread muffins and collard greens were great
- Cons: Overall: Food was terrible and the music was too loud
Soulfood the way your mother prepared it.

Nellie's Soulfood Restaurant & Bar has the best soulfood it taste just like the way my mother used to prepare her meals. You can eat it and not have to add any seasonings to it, it is just that good. My favorite meal is the short ribs, greens, rice/gravy, yams, and we can not forget the cornbread, you can not have greens and no cornbread. My goodness just thinking about it makes my mouth very watery. They give you more than enough, i can never eat all of my food, i always have some leftover for that late night snack. And you know what they say it always taste better the next day.

GOOD FOOD, GOOD DRINKS.

I found this place quite by accident, though I only live a three minute drive away, finding out that my favorite bartender of all time from another venue, the fabulous Tommie, was there. Went by to say hello, had a huge dinner and found a new place to frequent.
My husband and I both ordered the seafood platter (comes with three sides as well) and were totally stuffed. The sides are basic southern fare (and being a transplanted southerner, much appreciated by me). You definitely get more than your money's worth and you will not leave hungry. The staff is friendly and you feel welcome, unlike more "upscale" places, where the wait staff acts as if they are doing you a favor.
The bar is nice and cozy, a casual, laid-back atrmosphere, and of course, you have Tommie taking care of you.
I highly recommend Nellie's for casual dining and for a few drinks after work or on the weekend.
- Pros: GOOD FOOD, FRIENDLY STAFF, GREAT LITTLE BAR
- Cons: A BIT HARD TO FIND IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE AREA
