Not a bad place to try. I visited this bar recently with some friends from out of town. They heard that it was historic and wanted to see where Jack London was known to have frequented. I like that the bartender was attentive since may places with some sort of gimmick aren't the best when it comes to service. I won't say this place is going to replace my local watering hole, but I wouldn't be opposed to meeting someone here if this is the place they chose.

Magical. I don't usually buy into the whole "It's historical therefore it's good" thing, but this place really does have some magic in it. The drinks were good, but the real attraction is the decor and the beautiful views.

Oakland's original sailors' pub has cold brew, buttered rum and a slanted bar and floor from the 1906 earthquake.. In Short
Jack London sat inside this waterside bar throughout his life, extracting details for his novels from the seafaring chaps that stopped here before heading abroad--and thus the name. In such a small space, made of timber from an old ship, you can't help but spark up dialogue with the regulars, as you sip Golden Bear lager, here deemed "Heinold's Lager." Step out of the cavernous space, lit only by original gas lamps, and take advantage of the generic outdoor seating on Jack London Square.

most unique bar in the bay area. Heinold's is just the best, most incredible little bar if you are into bay area history, lore, and a historic, unique atmosphere. There's no place quite like this, even in San Francisco. You owe it to yourself to at least check it out... sit down at the very, very crooked, lopsided bar, order and drink from one of the friendly, courteous bartenders (Donnie is very cool and knowledgeable about the bay area bar scene), and soak in the history surrounding you. Kudos also go out to the current owner who bought it from the original Heinold family back in the 80's. She has purposefully kept the bar exactly the way it was and it's charm and historical significance remain intact.

History galore. I took my dad, a WWII vet, to this historic bar and he loved it. They have hats tackjed to the ceiling from many of the ships that left from the port during the war. With a tiny slooped bar and great staff I always bring of out towers to see this place.

best summertime kickin it spot. I love this place - besides the hilarity of such a tiny tiny bar, the staff is past cool, the tap is full of great beers, and you can sit outside and watch the sunset or enjoy a breezy day by the waterfront. And the historical piece is awesome too. The perfect place to enjoy Oakland.
