Battam Bang Couldn't get Better

Four words-- reminded me of mom. The Somlaw Machou was excellent. The perfect amount of pinapples and tomatoes and tamarind to give off that sour taste, not too salty and didn't overuse the fish sauce. The Banchev was cooked to perfection. Not too mushy; not too crispy. The filling was darn good too. We had some red curry that had a little too much coconut milk in it. This is also combined with the fact that my mom's curry is really unrivaled. But otherwise, mom would have been proud of this place. Try it out-- ask them for suggestions if you've never eaten Cambodian food. The service was excellent; the prices totally worth it.

Yummy Cambodian Food in Oakland
by huskyduck
Was in Oakland for one night and headed to Chinatown to eat. Drove around and noticed most places were dead, except this one little place called Battambang, which was full of diners. I took this as a good sign and went in. What a great decision!
The catfish sauteed in lemon grass was probably the best catfish dish I have ever eaten. Spring rolls were teeny but meaty. The spinach sauteed with ginger I ordered was a mistake, but at least it was good for me.
Service was lacking but I attributed that to the full house of diners and only a few busy wait persons. For this value, I can live with that.
- Pros: catfish, value
- Cons: long wait for food
Battambang, Battamboom!

Just four blocks from BART's 12th Street stop in Oakland, lies this little Cambodian gem. I had never had Cambodian food before and I would best describe it as a cross between Thai and Vietnamese. We had the luk-luk appetizer, grilled flank steak morsels over lettuce, peppers and tomatoes. For dinner I had pan-fried catfish in lime sauce and grilled chicken while my friend raved about their grilled lambchop special. Everything was delicious and tasty, entrees were all under $15. Waitstaff was courteous and personable but could be improved. If you haven't tried this restaurant and like Thai/Vietnamese, you should try it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised...
- Pros: Good Flavor, Unusual menu
