Embarrassingly bad.
I'm forced to give one star in order to give a review.
I attended an evening buffet with old friends - and spent $140.
There was no silverware, napkins or even water. And this was a $50 meal.
The only food was some breaded hors d'oeuvres and they weren't edible. No drinks were included - not even water - you had to buy it at the bar and it was Not bottled - it was tap.
Imitation Cokes went for $8.50 and two of them were less than the can that they were poured from.
It was a captive crowd so Fat Lady required payment at the door - prior to anyone seeing what they were getting.
The place was filthy and the one bathroom that serviced upstairs and downstairs held exactly one person at a time.
Any positive reviews are from the owners or staff.
HANGOUT FOR OLD, BALD, FAT MEN PLAYING DICE !!!. I think you have to be at least 75 years old to sit at the bar. The Fat Lady has seen better days as has its owners and its customers. The last time I was there the place was almost empty and the bartender was rude and maybe a little drunk. So we left and went to another restaurant. A fun visit at Halloween and Christmas to view decorations - but thats all !!!
OWNER (Jerry) does NOT pay his bills.
I have not dined at The Fat Lady Restaurant in Jack London Square of Oakland. This is a review about the integrity of its owner. I am a hard working plumber that provided a service for this business. I completed the job and was given the run around by management for 2 days in regards to collecting payment. Keep in mind the invoice was signed at the completion of the job. This means the customer is satisfied with the service provided.
Finally I spoke with the owner of "The Fat Lady" (JERRY). He was very rude, obnoxious and impossible to deal with. He flat out refused to pay the bill and hung up the phone. I then came to find out he has a long history of this kind of behavior (Get the work done and refuse to pay). This is the very reason why OUR country is in this current economic crisis. It's called GREED!!! JERRY you are morally bankrupt and If your repeat or would-be patrons read this review I hope they decide to dine elsewhere to take a stand against what you represent. You have certainly lost my business
I gave you 1 star only because I had to in order to post this review
Never Again!!!!!!. never! is what I have to say. We spent over $130.00 and food was very cold, drinks were ordered with salt not sugar. AND to top it off WE were chased down by the General Manager down the street because we did not leave enough TIP. WTF!!!
Thought it was great. I visited back in 2007, Four other Navy shipmates, and myself met in Oakland for a reunion, hadn't seen each other in 37 years, we stayed in the Jack London square area for the weekend, and visited the fat lady for cocktails on Saturday afternoon. After a while the whole place was on to why we were there, and we actually met a few people from my home the Boston area. The owner and the bartender were very nice to us all, and they gave us a free round of drinks, along with a few other patrons. While we didn't eat there, we did enjoy a few hours in a nice relaxed setting, planning to return in May 2009.
Terrific atmosphere and ambiance - overall good food. A friend from the East Bay picked this restaurant as a meeting point for a group of us to have our quarterly lunch - most of us coming from S.F. We were impressed immediately with the atmosphere and general ambiance and most importantly because we could have a conversation and hear one another easily. It was a Saturday brunch when we dined and the first experience with the Fat Lady for all. The food was wonderful (from salads to eggs & french toast) but took a very long time to be served which was concerning as the place was not busy and no where near full to capacity and arriving early, we had been the first to order. The waitress did let us know however that there would be a delay in getting our food after we had waited more than half an hour after ordering. As it was a social occasion for us it was not an issue but what really spoiled the entire experience was that the bill was delivered immediately without an inquiry as to whether we wanted any thing additional such as desert, coffee etc. "Here's your hat; what's your hurry!". Other than the bum's rush, the experience was good. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends but would certainly protest being herded out if it reoccurred! (note: there was no wait for tables when this happened)
Nostalgic. I used to work in San Leandro before becoming a domestic goddess 8 years ago. I loved to take customers to the fat lady and to meet collegues at the bar for cocktails on a Friday. Since becoming the goddess of my domain, I haven't been able to get to the Fat Lady since my "career change." Well, that's all about to change. I'm going to a concert at the Paramount in February and thought how fun it would be to have dinner first, but where? The Fat Lady was the first and only place I thought of. I can't wait to come back, I'm bringing my dad who is going to adore the ambiance, the food, the wine and the history. Thanks Fat Lady for being part of my nostalgia. Can't wait! Yummy!!!!!!!!!!!
Heavenly.... The food was excellent, the atmosphere was just suburb and the staff was great. The owner herself stopped us to take a complementary picture near the famous fat lady painting. Whether you're looking for just a drink at the bar or a full meal I highly recommend the Fat Lady. I was more than happy with my experience.
