Overview
Covering 100 acres of Knowland Park, the Oakland Zoo is home to more than 400 animals from around the world. Several distinct habitats are recreated here; African Veldt, African
Savanna, Australian Outback and a Tropical Rainforest. Perennial zoo favorites like giraffes, elephants, lions and monkeys are all well-represented. The children's zoo houses alligators, otters, goats and the like. Kids are allowed to pet some of the domestic animals.
The Experience
The zoo includes a rides area where kids can enjoy carousels and a small train that makes periodic trips around the park. A sky ride transports visitors high above the zoo for a bird's-eye view. Some of the rides require a small extra fee, but a park with picnic tables is free to the public. Other facilities include an environmental education center complete with classrooms, discovery room and a theater.…
